DABs: mutators as a good place for central rules

DABs: mutators are a good place for central rules. Yaml defines what the project needs, but the mutator defines what the platform needs:

- Global jjobs parameters

- standard tags, like env, owner, domain, and cost_center.

- default email notifications.

- Check compute settings, for example, serverless rules.

- validators in CI/CD

Resilience, cross-region, and cross-cloud

None of the new features matters if your platform goes down when a region or cloud has an outage. Cross-region and cross-cloud recovery is non-negotiable. This is key for any platform hosting applications, as it enables the components mentioned above to be 100% available.

BI platforms ranking

Not off the charts like in AI platforms, but in BI, Databricks is included for the first time and already is second in visionaries #databricks

Customer data lake

Once your apps are hosted in Databricks, you need one more element...

Customer data lake

If you need to run campaigns and maintain master records, a customer data lake becomes essential as it allows you to build your own solution (the premise: SaaS is dead) with all the tools to support it #databricks #DataAISummit

RT Lakehouse

RT Lakehouse: Seven milliseconds to read from cloud storage; it was an impressive demo. I think it will leave the competition speechless, though, for now that capability is limited to select customers in private preview. What it signals is a clear objective: to deliver ultra-fast reads so that open formats can be used to serve end users directly through an application. It is an important step toward building a hybrid database. #databricks #DataAISummit

UI sync back to DABs

If you deploy a bundle from the UI in development mode (source-linked deployment) and edit it in the UI, changes are now propagated to the files. Really useful for jobs and dashboards. For jobs, of course, please always review in GIT as results in some complicated bundles (including my favorite mutators) cannot be guaranteed.

Catalog Commits are here

Catalog Commits are here, and they are bringing to databricks and UC:

- concurrency control, because Unity Catalog coordinates the winning commit

- governance, because supported clients resolve table state through Unity Catalog

- lays the foundation for stronger read performance, because some commit metadata can be served from Unity Catalog

- new functionality like multi-statement, multi-table transactions

- making Unity Catalog the source of truth for the latest Delta table state
