How to practice my composition in real life?

I just stated studying photography and want to improve on my composition or developing my “photographers eye”. How do I apply many of the tips and tricks to an actual session or scene.

For example, when I take my kids to the park. How do I approach “the park”. What kinds of things should I be looking out for? How about on the streets? What should be my “mindset”. How do I “analyze/study” light on these context? TIA
