ROG Ally ergonomics mod WIP
I love my Ally, but the only thing I dislike (besides the battery life) is the ergonomics. The left stick feels too high and the right stick too much towards my thumb, making it more difficult to aim accurately. When the Ally X came out, Asus updated the layout, fixing the joystick placement. I tried to get as close to that layout as possible.
THE MOD
I replaced the RGB rings by 3d printed pieces. The edge of the ring was 2mm thick. I also decreased the radius of the joystick stem. In total it gave me about 3.5mm room to move the joystick around. The left stick was moved down 3.5mm. The right stick was moved 3.3mm up and 1.5mm left (I tried a 45° angle but the fan is in the way).
The joystick modules are stuck to the PCB with weak double sided tape for now.
ISSUES
The screw holes on the PCB stick out, so the joystick module does not sit flat. I am still looking for a way to fixate the joysticks more reliably and accurately.
The stem seems too thick still so I lost a bit of the range of motion.
The caps don't have a skirt and they are a little too short to fit my Skull&Co covers.
CONCLUSION
The ergonomics feel a lot better. It took no time adjusting. I hope to solve the remaining issues soon so that I can release the print files.
