Stupid sci-fi plot points

I tried re-watching the movies after a while and god are the plot points stupid. Speaking from strictly a scientific sense, nothing about it makes sense. How they're able to isolate an enzyme from blood and know its structure and yet with all the world's resources and existential pressure, can't somehow manufacture it, how Brenda gets better with Thomas' blood despite neurodegeneration being impossible to reverse, how they keep talking about how close they are to a cure even when they seemingly have no plans of making a cure for enough people (I mean, seriously... Is one person's blood supposed to be enough for the entire world?). And also, they should with all their scientific brilliance know if the problem is incurable from the start. They already face an uphill battle: the enzymes must cross the BBB if injected IV (which is normally impossible but I guess with some encephalitis weakening the barrier it's plausible). It wouldn't take much more for it to be pretty clear that a cure is impossible, in much the same way a blanket "cure for cancer" is impossible. In any case, it's strange to me that they'd be so unaware of whether this problem is even mechanistically solvable at all.
