How long for noticeable heart rate and average pace improvements?

How long for noticeable heart rate and average pace improvements?

Hi All,

For background I would say I am a relatively healthy individual. Have played sport alongside regular gym sessions for most of life. Hitting my 30's now, I am looking to prolong my fitness and running is something I've found cathartic/enjoyable after recovering from a bilateral hernia repair early this year.

I'm circa 3-4 months into this journey, but feel that my progress isn't quite where it should be. I'm researching more into running techniques and learning the importance of cadence etc. I know I need to run the miles first, and results will follow.

That being said, why do my runs feel so difficult when I try to push faster times? For example, I feel quite comfortable around the 144-165 HR. But as soon as I get to 170 it's like I hit a wall. Is this something others have experienced? What worked for you to help you get over this? For example, I am comfortable running 5:37 for 18kms, but as soon as I try to hit the sub 5:00 paces, I fall apart after only a few KMs.

Appreciate any insights or experiences you've had.

Cheers
