Hi! I am getting a new asphalt driveway and the class 5 gravel was recently put in. In the quote it said they would “Add Class 5 base material as needed to ensure a minimum of 4 inches of base.” When I look at the sides of the driveway it is obvious there is not 4”. My question is on the sides of the driveway it is normal to not have 4”? Or should it be 4” throughout including at the edges?

I was also told they didn’t sub-cut the driveway as they said that removing some of that underlayer could cause it to be less compacted. Does this seem reasonable?
