What are your favorite non-chain spots that are filled with character, quirks, or you has it's own unique personality? Don't relegate it to just restaurants. For example, I was pretty impressed with Joli Jardin flower shop. I go tokyo is another place I've heard people enjoy. So, what are your favorites?
