ReTerminal e1004 working with Immich
Thanks to the amazing work done by /u/oetiker I got my new e1004 running TRMNL firmware with byonk on my server. I manually flashed his latest PR on github for integrating the e1004 with the TRMNL firmware, and set up byonk with a profile for it. And some help from his comments here on Reddit gave a great starting point for calibrating the color and configuration in byonk.
In the end I couldn't be happier. Now I finally have my dream digital photo frame. Nice design, full color eink, fully local with Immich and byonk. The colors and quality of the rendering is beautiful, as good as I have ever seen with an eink color display. As good as what I have seen (in demos) of the Aura Ink frame which costs way more, and relies on Aura's (admittedly very good) cloud service. But here I'm not relying on any cloud connection at all, it works perfectly with no internet and keeps all my family photos private.
For the Immich integration I just built (very much with AI help) a custom Lua script and SVG to grab random photo assets from Immich from a specified album. For this I'm really looking forward to workflows in Immich 3.0 where I am hoping to set up a smart album that can automatically be curated to be used with the e1004. But for now, I really finally have the photo frame I have been dreaming of for many years.
