Nine Days Post Op - Feeling Great!

As someone who used this sub for the majority of his information heading into surgery, just wanted to give back and provide a different perspective than what I had seen on here. I hope others have had similar experiences!

Background: Healthy, active 34M. Last Monday I had surgery to repair my torn labrum and femorplasty on my cam impingement in my right hip. Nine days post op, have nearly weened off all pain meds (still taking aspirin as the doc requested it). I did receive a shot of Exparel which I guess is a long lasting anesthetic while I was under, this was a surprise as I hadn’t heard it mentioned in this sub or on YT. I start PT next week but I’ve been doing a pretty basic routine at home the last few days (glute squeezes, ankle rotations, heel slides, etc). Normal walking causes no pain, but I’m still using crutches as the doctor wants to ensure the area is fully healed before I push too hard. I have moderate bruising still but no pain. For recovery my doc only issued me crutches (no CPM, ice machine, or hip brace), and I bought some compression socks to help with circulation.

I had braced myself after reading several posts on this sub about how bad the first few weeks are but my journey has been the complete opposite. I’m in a great spot mentally and physically.

Wondering how many have had similar recoveries and what I should expect as I continue moving forward?

Elective Surgery Choice

Hi all,

Was given the choice from my doc to get the surgery done. I love my job but it is very active (heavy lifting on small boats, a lot of fitness required) and I’m worried the surgery will affect that negatively. Pain is 90% manageable with 2x aleve’s a day but with that I’m not able to really push my lower body much (hard running, squat/lifting, etc). Some days I’ll need to pop another one to sleep/function but for the most part, two a day keeps me functioning. Doc also said 6-9 months for recovery.

MRI was done and I have cam FAI with a labral tear in my right hip. Been in pain for over two years now and I’ve tried everything from dry needling, PT, ice, foam roll, to stretches and yoga, nothing seems to help beside the pain meds.

I think I’m leaning towards getting it done as I don’t see a future where I’m pain free off meds and I am concerned about being on aleve for the rest of my life. Would love to hear some feedback from anyone with similar experiences and your path.
