I want to talk about how strange it is to write a sex scene when your parents are eventually going to read your book

This is a weirdly specific anxiety that nobody warned me about and that I've now heard mentioned, quietly, by enough writer friends that I think it deserves a proper conversation.

I'm writing in a genre (obviously Romantasy) where sex scenes are basically expected, and my mother reads everything I publish. My father will eventually skim it. My aunt was at the launch of my first book and bought four copies. I do not want any of these people to read me writing the word "thrust." I especially do not want them to read me writing it well.

But here's the thing. If I write the sex scenes badly because I'm imagining my mother reading them, I'm failing the book. The reader who picked it up because of the genre I'm writing in deserves a real scene, written with the same care as every other scene. The reader hasn't met my mother and shouldn't have to suffer for my discomfort about her existence.

I've mostly solved this by, when I sit down to write those chapters, very deliberately not thinking about anyone I know reading them. I write them for an imaginary reader who picked the book up off a bookshop table because the cover looked good and has zero relationship to me. It works most of the time. The morning after, while editing, I still sometimes have to physically push the awareness of my mother's eventual readership out of my head.

I don't have a real takeaway here. I just think it's funny and a little sad that this is part of the job and nobody really talks about it. If you also write in a genre with sex and you also have family who reads you, I see you. We're all silently grimacing through the same chapter

I’m trying to remember a fantasy romance / Kindle Unlimited book and it’s driving me crazy 😭 🤪 🎩

What I remember:

The main character is a girl who either volunteers or gets drafted/selected into some kind of military-style academy or training facility

Students are sorted by elemental powers into different houses or maybe factions? Maybe wings?

The FMC secretly more than one power, but is somehow able to hide it. She’s also a hidden princess even though she grew up poor.

Part of the academy involves bonding with animals or maybe they shift into animals? Like, even though they already have powers they also shift into something. Maybe Harpies???

Some students don’t survive the trials

Everyone gets different beasts, but the FMC gets with an ancient super powerful type creature. Like a cat with a smushed face.

The creature can communicate with her mentally

I remember there being a pond/lake on the academy grounds that students thought was haunted/cursed or they avoided because they knew some dangerous creature lived there. They get to school by a magical train.

Some characters are related to Greek gods somehow? Maybe like cousins or something.

The FMC might have been a twin, I can’t remember though. But she’s super weak and requires extra training to make it through.

I think there was some romance too. Definitely BookTok vibes

Does this sound familiar to anyone????

I’m starting to wonder if I combined multiple books in my head lol.

Unpopular Opinion: We gotta START judging babies for being named after Romantasy books

Society is so quick to mom shame and blame women for everything, and frankly it’s got to stop.

Ever heard of the Dorian Gray effect? Social Tagging? Bidirectional contextual influences?

Yeah. These babies subconsciously LOOK like their Romantasy names.

Start judging the babies.

It’s weird as fuck that your baby boy popped out with big ol’ wings, a perfectly slicked back 1/2 up man-bun, and a fuck boy attitude. He was begging to be named Cassian.

Another kid popped out bleeding from his eyeballs with an apple in hand. He was just asking to be named Jacks.

Remember: the perinatal phase is more significant than we ever thought. These kids LOOK like they belong in a Romantasy. Let’s place the blame where it should TRULY lie.

Main characters like this

Main characters who feel like aliens, maybe they are super sheltered or isolated or from another planet.

They could be trying to fit in, in a wolrd that’s really different from where they’re from.

uj/ the way each new picture was a jump scare sent me to the moon 😂

My “Review” of “Broken Dove” by “Dani Francis”

You’re in luck sloopies.

Due to the time difference and my Advanced™️ reading skills, I’ve already finished~~ MAGA Elite 2: Electric Boogalo~~o Broken Dove and I’m here to report my findings 🫡

Unfortunately for all of us, Wren has somehow lost a full standard deviation in her IQ score since we left her. Despite being a “double agent” for most of book 1, she hasn’t been able to grasp the concepts of discernment or operational planning.

She’s back with the Mods aka the rebels (but not really?), but her hitler youth boyfriend, Cross (absolutely stupid name, btw) is still fighting fascism…on the side of fascism. Despite learning each other’s identities as psychic pen pals last book, they don’t seem to utilize the hive-mind/mind-meld thing to actually communicate their feelings. Because why have healthy communication when you can have whatever this is. Wren somehow learned to block the mind-meld with zero training, which I call bullshit on because, back in the day, in the original Star Wars EU we learned it takes a very powerful force user to block others out.

Anyway.

Grayson, flirty blond that we thought tragically died in the first book was reanimated didn’t actually die and he’s like the Maverick in this dystopian Top Gun: cocky, shorter than 5’7, has weird teeth, but is somehow hot. Honestly the book would have been better if Wren acted on even an ounce of her tingly stummy feelings for Grayson. But, like most plot points in this sequel, that fizzled out with zero satisfaction for the reader.

There’s a bunch of boring battle and fire bombing scenes. Wren shoots things and is insubordinate to her superiors. Blah blah blah. Nothing gets resolved and Wren is STILL waffling between fascism-hottie-with-a-side-of-full-fascism, and buying into an organization that wants to protect her marginalized identity.

A tale as old as time, really.

At least in Broken Dove, real wages haven’t decreased for the first time in 2 decades, so maybe dystopia isn’t so bad after all.

uj/ I actually haven’t read the book yet and this is pure conjecture. But I AM planning to start tonight…

Some people love to think that reading romance books is not reading books. They can't be count as reading books.

I love to explore all genres.

Recently, one of my mentors told me that reading a romance book isn't actually reading a book as it’s not the Bible they don't teach you anything. They are only for entertainment purposes.

What's your opinion folks?

And no, I will not respond to comments I disagree with.

I’m tired of the “I’m tired of the ‘I’m tired’” posts

Yeah, I said it. I'm tired of the “I'm tired of the “I’m tired,’” rants.

Complaining is my God-given right. And I am fucking exhausted. Sometimes I only sleep 4 hours a night because I need to make goods on FarmVille 3 so I don’t get kicked out of my co-op. That makes me very tired and also cuts into my Romantasy reading time.

Anyway.

Imagine complaining is like Mexican food. You try it for the first time and are like, “Oh my god, this is amazing, I want more. I might never stop.”

So you keep going to new Mexican restaurants, trying and loving everything because it's all so new and delicious.

Eventually, you notice a trend. Shared ingredients and flavor profiles. You discover it's becoming difficult to find a restaurant that does something you haven't tasted before. That puts enough of a spin on their dishes to really stand out.

So you’re thinking "Wow, I still really like Mexican food, but maybe I there’s a fast food option that serves icy little radioactive drinks along with some tasty innovations inspired by Mexican cuisine!”

So you make a run South of the Border to your neighborhood heaven on Earth Taco Bell.

Your taste buds are tingling.

You try a Cheesy Gordita Crunch for the first time. The Baja Blast splashes down your throat, quenching even the Platonic ideal of Thirst. Your life has been changed for the better.

Taco Bell is exactly like complaining about Romantasy.

Think about it. You love Taco Bell. You also love complaining about Romantasy. You would eat Taco Bell every night if it were socially acceptable, just like you’d shit on the dumbass FMC from {Silver Elite} for the 100th time.

A loaded Crunchwrap supreme is just like making a post about how {ACOTAR} ship wars are genuinely insane. So many flavor combinations, so spicy- might even hurt yourself for trying it.

A Chalupa Supreme is for our sophisticated sloopies. The same ones who know the classics and won’t hesitate to remind you that {Fourth Wing} is just a derivative of Homestar Runner {Dragonriders of Pern}.

Maybe you’re a basic sloopie. You reach for a 5-Layer Bean Burrito with a lil dab of mild sauce just like you’ll whine about virgin FMCs. Live it up, sis.

Mexican Pizza is like our fearless sloopies who have somehow been able to read the entirety of the {From Blood and Ash} series and its spinoffs, yet continue to spread the good word about how the books are fucking endless yet unable to deliver even one (1x) adequate threesome scene.

And when you’re feeling a little frisky, you order a lil Cinnabon treat ball for desert just like you might clutch your pearls complaining about inadequate TWs.

Mmm, delicious.

I’m tired of people complaining that complaining isn’t the fucking spice of life. IT IS.

And, baby, my favorite sauce packet is Diablo 😈

As the title says, I'm wondering why every single romantasy books FMC need to have a placeholder bf that is either a jerk, dies, is a waste of pages, is incorporeal, exists only in FMC’s delusions, stands too close to FMC, breathes in her direction, etc?

Why the hell is this a common trope?

Why would the FMC have any type of relationship with another man besides the MMC? That is a waste of time.

I’m 5 pages into a book {WargShackled} and I can already tell this relationship is going to immediately fail because I am Nostradamus.

I want to read the story about the FMC and MMC not another failed attempt at a relationship. Am I the only one who hates this?

DON’T recommend a love triangle, because I’ve NEVER read one and I won’t start now!

I'm looking for good romantasy books but I'm very picky :/

I haven't read ANYTHING and I don't have friends who read either, so I need some help from people who read books more regularly.

Things I'm looking for in a book:

- NO love triangles

- only straight couples (gay side characters are fine I guess, but it’s unacceptable for the main one to be even a little bi-curious. Ew.)

- nothing too dark. No I will not explain.

- a female lead (NOT.GAY.)

- some spice

- i don't want the heteronormative couple to only get official at the end of the book, I prefer a story where they get together pretty soon and have some "trials" they need to get through together. The trials can’t include being attracted to the opposite sex.

- no open endings

- no cheating

- some thropes I like (just as a guiding line): arranged marriage, revenge romance, fated mates, love triangles

Thanks already for the help!

Keep in mind, I’m very picky even though I can’t read and this list is the most generic (yet simultaneously homophobic) list posted to date.

im a new reader.

So far I’ve made it 17% into {Throne of Ass} but i have this awful feeling………….something bad is going to happen……………and im PISSED 😤😡🥵🤬

kale 🥬 is my fav cruciferous vegetable and love interest that God has ever put on his green earth.

he noticed details, is patient and kind, insanely loyal, and i love a cute slow burn while my GI tract tries to process this leafy green. With all this dietary fiber, i can see why she named the series throne of ass 🍑 💦

but with legit like 20 more books to come i know it cant be that easy but ima be honest >!if Dorian and kale arent endgame!< im gonna scream and whoever takes Kale’s place better be 10x more amazing idc 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️
