Dispersed Camping Luck?
We're thinking of doing a trip up to GTNP late August and we're going to try to get there middle of the day on a Friday. We've stayed at Colter Bay before, but it's more expensive than a few years ago and we want to avoid paying $61/night (!!!!!) for a site. Gros Ventre also has some availability, but is similarly $59/night. To avoid paying $250+ for our stay, we're thinking about dispersed camping outside the East boundary of the park.
1 - Do you think we'll be able to find available spots without too much hassle on a Friday early afternoon? We'll have a 1 y/o baby with us and not looking to spend a ton of time chasing campsites...
2 - I've found a couple recommendations online, but if you're willing to share any of your favorite dispersed campsites with us that might have good chances of availability, please feel free to put them below or send in a private message if you don't want to overcrowd them :) Looking for something less than ~45min to the major trailheads Jenny Lake, Lupine, etc. We're extremely low-impact and follow LNT religiously, so we'll be sure to treat any recommendations with respect for your favorite places.
3 - Recommendations for food storage (bears) when dispersed camping? USFS website says a locked car is okay... but I've heard stories of that not working out great haha. Should we not worry about it too much? When we stayed at CB they had the bear box which was really convenient, but no such luxury on the FS land.
Any other dispersed camping tips specific for the area? Thank you in advance!
