Hales Machinery optic plates

I’ve got a couple Romulus and I absolutely love them, but have had issues with the plates loosening after 500 to 1000 rounds. Really the only thing holding these back.

I had reached out to Andy from alpha and he sent their new plates, which seem great but fit terribly. They do not fit the posts at all. So much play. When torquing it down, it doesn’t sit flat due to the rubber rings they added on the bottom. Last range trip I could see the right side rising up.

So I reached back out to Andy and haven’t heard a thing, which is kinda disappointing but whatever. I didn’t buy these Romulus for the warranty or their customer service. I bought them because they have phenomenal bones. Are they the best gun ever stock? No, but they have a lot of potential and the bones feel like they’re on another level compared to other budget 2011s.

While looking for cheely magwells I stumbled upon Hales Machinery. To my surprise, of all the places out there, they have optic plates specifically for the Romulus. Only plates I’ve found elsewhere from alpha.

Received yesterday and the plate fits. It’s the best fitting plate I have by far. No wiggle. No shims.

Only challenge for some is these plates require an fps that doesn’t protrude over the frame. The upside to this is it removes the contact and vibrations of the fps to the plate. It really should have been designed this way. Having the fps contact the plates is a disaster, and likely one of the causes of the plates loosening.

I genuinely don’t understand how another company is making better fitting plates than the company that made the gun.

But, yeah, check out Hales and support a company making pretty solid stuff that may actually solve the problem.

Polished rom with the DSC comp

3rd test run, first with the new comp, and it’s running pretty great. The plate loosened up again, and still waiting to hear back from alpha about getting more of the new plates.

- 19lb ismi mainspring
- 7lb ismi recoil spring minus 2 coils

Still need to fit the tungsten guide rod and flat fps.

Apologies for the flickering. iPhone slowmo hates the range lights.

Nearly done polished Romulus

Spin on comp from DSC finally came in today. Planning to test it out tomorrow. Still have a few things to do, fit a flat bottom fps and a 2 piece tungsten guide rod, but it’s really turned out as good as I could have hoped. Already shoots pretty flat, but hoping to make it even more stupid.

On their site, DSC claims their comps allow you to use a toolless rod. I can’t confirm that, and not seeing how this would help with the physical constraints around the install of a single piece rod. Other than that, the comp from them seems great.

Grips shipping

Ahhh. Now that I ordered a cheely grip the other day, it ships.

Worse problems to have but think this grip will have to wait a bit for a new gun.

Edit: showed up today. It’s pretty nice. Feels pretty great, although I think I’d prefer a little more grip for the support hand. Way better than stock and probably the best stock grip you’ll find for anywhere around this price. Certainly feels better and considerably nicer than the new 2k11 grips.

Interesting day with the romulus…es

Fit a flat bottom firing pin stop for the matte Romulus, repinned the comp, no more wiggle, and picked up a new shiny one. Did not believe the polished version was even smoother, but they are. The fitment on my original is great but this one is even better. Super tight and super smooth. The 2k11s don’t feel this good.

How aren’t these more popular? How isn’t this $2k+? Somehow so much of the 2011 world has not realized how great these are.

Hoping the aluminum grip shows up soon, although I still see the order as “awaiting fulfillment”. Have a DSC thread on comp coming, already have an egw kit but will run it stock for a few trips to shoot it side by side with the matte to see how it compares. Planning to send the matte one off to get ports, at some point.

Haven’t seen these mentioned yet. Apologies if this is old news.

I had reached out to Andy about the plate loosening after 500ish rounds pretty consistently. To my surprise he responded and mentioned they had new plates and would happily ship them.

They showed up today, pretty quickly, and wanted to share some pics for others to see. Unfortunately the original rmsc is installed, and I’ll leave it on until it loosens up again.

Shoutout to Andy for the quick help and the company in general for trying to provide a solution instead of just suggesting some bandaid. Not sure how they’ll perform but this feels like some level of confirmation since I recently I bought another Romulus.
