Why I cannot be around them

I’ve wanted to share this for a while since joining this sub.

When I was 15 (20 years ago, I’m 35 now) I worked at a vet clinic as a kennel worker. It was my first job. The vets had tags on the kennels of dogs who were not dog friendly (as in they could not be taken out with other dogs). One shift my coworker and I were working and she took a small dog out while I took out a pit with no tag and no warning it was not dog friendly. I thought everything was fine and I didn’t know at the time what I should be looking out for. We took the dogs out into the gated area and the minute the pit I had saw the smaller dog, it lunged away from me while dragging me and latched onto the small dog’s neck. I instinctively to protect the small dog put my hand between the pits mouth and the dog to block it and it latched onto me instead. This dog latched to hard it shit all over me and when it finally realized I was a person it let go. The dog was put back in the pen and my parents took me to the ER to get 4 stitches on my finger.

I later learned the vets lied to the small dog’s owner and told them their dog got caught in the fence and required surgery. The small dog survived because of what I did as a child, but that made me never want to be a vet.

15 years ago when I was 20, I decided I wanted to be a good person and adopt a dog instead of “buying” one. I adopted a pit/ Bernese mix that I thought was adorable. I was 20 and stupid and thought it would be a great idea. He was 80 pounds and very lovable. The shelter told me they were “unsure” how he was around dogs. My parents wanted to introduce him to their puggle (pug/beagle) and I thought it would be a good idea with a muzzle I brought that he wore and they played well. I told my boyfriend at the time not to bring treats or toys as that could cause reactivity, and I thought we were okay. My mom thought they played well, and she suggested I take the muzzle off. I did, and they played well together. Then I saw the boyfriend at the time give the pit a treat that he had in his pocket. And it was hell after that. The pit latched onto my parents dog’s neck and tore him apart. My dad tried to beat him with a metal bat and he still wouldn’t let go. He bit my mom in the process while she tried to pull him off their dog, later to have to pick up their dog’s teeth in their yard. This thing killed my parent’s dog in front of my parents and my little brother. I took him to get BEd after.

It’s been a really long time since any of that happened. I feel like a terrible person. I now have two Australian Shepherds with my husband who are so kind and loving. I am so worried about karma coming for me that I watch them all the time.

I just had to share and get this off my chest.
