Jeopardy! discussion thread for Thur., May 21

Here are today's contestants:

  • Liz Guinn, a law school administrator from Seattle, Washington;
  • Sidney Elie-Pierre, a software engineer from Albertson, New York; and
  • Chris D'Angelo, a content manager from Washington, D.C. Chris is a one-day champ with winnings of $19,401.

Jeopardy!

NAME THAT AUTHOR // FAMILIAL WORDS & PHRASES // BUSINESS NOTABLES // BROADWAY TITLE CHARACTERS // A REPUBLIC // IF YOU CAN, KEEP IT

DD1 - $600 - BUSINESS NOTABLES - Fred Smith lost around $30 million after founding this Memphis co. in 1971, but Fred's blackjack winnings in Vegas kept it flying (Chris dropped $3,200 down to $4,600.)

Scores at first break: Chris $7,200, Sidney -$200, Liz $1,600.

Scores entering DJ: Chris $8,000, Sidney -$800, Liz $3,400.

Double Jeopardy!

WHERE THE RESOURCES ARE // HISTORIC BRITS // THE MOVIE INDUSTRY // CONTAINS A TEXTING ABBREVIATION // THE DYE IS CAST // WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

DD2 - $1,200 - THE DYE IS CAST - Also known as mehndi, this plant "is used to make dye for temporary tattoos that can last up to 3 weeks (Chris improved by $2,200 up to $11,400 vs. $3,400 for Liz.)

DD3 - $1,600 - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? - In particle physics the muon has electrical charge; the muon type of this, discovered in 1962, doesn't (Chris lost $4,000 down to $11,000 vs. $8,600 for Liz.)

Chris found all three DDs from the lead, missed two of them and it got very close for a while, but he was able to maintain first into FJ at $14,600 vs. $11,000 for Liz, while ending in the red was Sidney at -$1,200.

Final Jeopardy!

SPORTS VENUES - Surface material laid down in 1909 gave a landmark venue this nickname; a 36-inch strip remains today

Both players were incorrect on FJ. Chris made a wager not large enough to cover a possible double-up by Liz, and that proved to be fortunate for him, as he held on with $9,199 for a two-day total of $28,600.

Final scores: Chris $9,199, Sidney -$1,200, Liz $7,300.

Wagering strategy: From second place in FJ, Liz chose to wager to pass Chris in the event he bet $0 and she was correct, while if she had bet nothing herself, she would have won when Chris missed.

Judging the writers: A clue described Meryl Streep's Oscar nominations as "innumerable", while in reality, they are indeed numerable. The number is 21, which the writers could have told us in the clue, but for some reason didn't.

Jeopardy!

DD1 - $1,000 - BIBLE PEOPLE IN THE QURAN - A tafsir, or commentary, says this royal "set forth from her country and reached Jerusalem" (With $2,600, Tristan dropped $1,600.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $2,400, Allegra $1,000, Chris $5,200.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $4,400, Allegra $2,000, Chris $8,000.

Double Jeopardy!

U.S. NATIONAL PARKS // WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK // THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE // THE GREAT DAYS OF JAZZ // WOMEN // "ORA" FARMING

DD2 - $2,000 - WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK - From Greek for narrowing spinal this occurs when the space inside the backbone is too small for the nerves, & ouch (Tristan lost $3,500 down to $8,500 vs. $13,600 for Chris.)

DD3 - $800 - "ORA" FARMING - Alexander Hamilton said of this quadrennial institution that, while it might not be perfect, it was "at least excellent" (From third place with $5,200, Allegra bet $5,000 and missed.)

All three DDs were missed and Chris didn't find any of them, so it worked in his favor as he led into FJ at $12,800 vs. $9,700 for Tristan and $1,400 for Allegra.

Final Jeopardy!

THE 20TH CENTURY - 51 days after this event, Edward Teller said the United States had lost "a battle more important & greater than Pearl Harbor"

Only Chris was correct FJ, adding $6,601 to win with $19,401.

Final scores: Tristan $6,599, Allegra $299, Chris $19,401.

Jeopardy! discussion thread for Tue., May 19

Here are today's contestants:

  • Sunil Hebbar, a physician from Redondo Beach, California;
  • Rose Sloan, a computer science professor from Boston, Massachusetts; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a nine-day champ with winnings of $188,501.

Jeopardy!

WHAT'S YOUR ANGLE? // TV SHOWS BY COUPLE // IT'S A "BOY" // CATCH YOU LATER, HOMES // A GAME OF NUMBERS // KEVIN & KAREN PATRA OF ANCIENT EGYPT

DD1 - $1,000 - WHAT'S YOUR ANGLE? - The first word in the name of this simple machine implies an angle; the steeper the slope, the more force required (Rose, in a tie for the lead with Tristan $4,800, added $3,500.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $4,800, Rose $8,300, Sunil $0.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $6,400, Rose $9,900, Sunil -$1,000.

Double Jeopardy!

AMERICAN LITERATURE // ON YOUR MERRY WAY // SCIENCE // THERE'S A WORD FOR THAT // COUNTRY FACTS // 1 HISTORICAL FIGURE, 2 PLAYS

DD2 - $1,600 - COUNTRY FACTS - The Mau Escarpment is a rampart along the western rim of The Great Rift Valley in this country (Sunil, at -$200, added $2,000.)

DD3 - $1,200 - ON YOUR MERRY WAY - There's lively debate over whether the title of this 18th century Christmas carol takes a comma & where (Sunil lost $2,600 on a true DD.)

Rose broke a tie with Tristan on DD1, then after Sunil found both DDs in DJ and remained far back. it was a race to the finish with Tristan coming out with the lead into FJ at $21,200 vs. $16,700 for Rose and $800 for Sunil.

Final Jeopardy!

20th CENTURY NAMES - Shunned by his religion when he went to study law in England, he met Christians who helped him awaken a "religious quest"

Tristan needed to be correct on FJ and he was the only player to do so, adding $12,201 to win with $33,401 for a 10-day total of $221,902.

Final scores: Tristan $33,401, Rose $12,199, Sunil $1.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the "slangy" four-letter word for when an animal has its tongue partway out is blep.

One more thing: The alleged "lively debate" over the comma referred to in DD3 revolves around its placement. I'm not finding anything suggesting a debate over if a comma is necessary at all, which it certainly is.

Correct Qs: >!DD1 - What is inclined plane? DD2 - What is Kenya? DD3 - What is "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"? (Note that "God rest ye merry" is a phrase meaning "may God grant you peace and happiness", and the title is not suggesting the "Gentlemen" themselves are "Merry".) FJ - Who was Gandhi?!<

Jeopardy! discussion thread for Mon., May 18

Here are today's contestants:

  • Thomas Trovato, a software developer from London, Ontario;
  • Amy Dewey, a part-time homemaker and part-time entrepreneur from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a eight-day champ with winnings of $158,501.

Jeopardy!

TRENDING GOOGLE SEARCHES OF YORE // 3-WORD CITIES // GL-ADVERBS // A SONG & A SCENE // ON THE JOB // LIFE, UH, FINDS A WAY

DD1 - $1,000 - 3-WORD CITIES - Arabic for "abode of peace", it's Tanzania's biggest city (Tristan doubled to $4,000.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $4,000, Amy $1,000, Thomas $4,600.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $8,800, Amy $1,600, Thomas $6,000.

Double Jeopardy!

ALL RESPECT TO THE BALLET & OPERA PEOPLE // ALPHABETICALLY NEXT // RULERS // "LOL" // POETRY IN NOVELS // MODERN TV WESTERNS

DD2 - $1,200 - ALL RESPECT TO THE BALLET & OPERA PEOPLE - The original cast of this Aaron Copland ballet was headed by Agnes de Mille, who choreographed it & danced the part of the lead cowgirl (Tristan improved by $6,000 up to $15,200 vs. $6,000 for Thomas.)

DD3 - $1,200 - "LOL" - A book by Simone de Beauvoir is titled "Brigitte Bardot and the" this literary character "Syndrome" (Thomas lost $7,200 on a true DD vs. $15,600 for Tristan.)

Thomas went all-in on DD3 with a chance to make it close but missed, so Tristan was left all alone on top into FJ at $22,400 vs. $4,400 for Amy and $1,200 for Thomas.

Final Jeopardy!

AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE - In the 1930s an automobile showroom occupied the first 2 floors of this building at 42nd & Lexington in Manhattan

Everyone was correct on this unusually easy FJ clue. Tristan added $7,600 to win with $30,000 for a nine-day total of $188,501.

Final scores: Tristan $30,000, Amy $4,400, Thomas $1,217.

Judging the writers: Despite the category, the FJ clue really had nothing to do with architecture. A category of BUSINESS HISTORY, FAMOUS BUILDINGS or NEW YORK CITY would have been more on point.

Correct Qs: >!DD1 - What is Dar es Salaam? DD2 - What is "Rodeo"? DD3 - What is "Lolita"? FJ - What is the Chrysler Building?!<

Jeopardy! discussion thread for Fri., May 15

Here are today's contestants:

  • Valerie Fulton, an attorney from Greenville, South Carolina;
  • Chayce Griffith, a professor of tree fruit physiology originally from Saline, Michigan; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a seven-day champ with winnings of $132,900.

Jeopardy!

____ OF ____: LITERARY EDITION // THE ELEMENTS // A MEAT CUTE // SONG SUNG "BLUE" // THE OLD WEST // EXPRESSIONS FROM THE SPORTING WORLD

DD1 - $600 - EXPRESSIONS FROM THE SPORTING WORLD - Anything easy to answer, or more specifically, "what if the game is tied after the regulation 7 innings?" (Tristan dropped $3,000 down to $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $4,000, Chayce $3,200, Valerie $600.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $3,200, Chayce $3,000, Valerie $1,400.

Double Jeopardy!

CIVIL WAR-ERA NUMBERS // WINGS // TV TITLE TOWNS // LET'S TALK ABOUT "X" // PEOPLES // COURT

DD2 - $2,000 - PEOPLES - Most indigenous Africans prefer Amazigh, meaning "free man", to this name derived from one the Romans used for foreigners (Chayce added $3,000 up to $10,800 vs. $4,800 for Tristan.)

DD3 - $1,200 - LET'S TALK ABOUT "X" - Examples include silent scream & working vacation (Tristan added $4,500 up to $10,500 vs. $12,000 for Chayce.)

Tristan found DD3 with exactly half of Chayce's score, chose to hold back $1,500 from his wager and was correct. As a result of Tristan not going all-in, Chayce was able to stay within two-thirds of Tristan into FJ, with Tristan at $18,900 vs. $12,800 for Chayce and $600 for Valerie.

Final Jeopardy!

PLAY CHARACTERS - This title character of an 1890 play is often called “the female Hamlet”

Only Tristan was correct on FJ, adding $6,701 to win with $25,601 for an eight-day total of $158,501.

Final scores: Tristan $25,601, Chayce $4,800, Valerie $1.

Wagering strategy: Chayce went for a big bet on FJ from within two-thirds of Tristan and with more than double of Valerie. By doing so, he forced himself to be correct on FJ to have a chance, while with a small wager, he would have won if Tristan missed without having to be correct himself.

TV troubles: No one quite figured out the abbreviated location in the title of the 2021 "back to its roots" spinoff of "CSI" is "Vegas", or the place in the title of rebooted sci-fi series set in New Mexico is "Roswell".

Correct Qs: >!DD1 - What is softball question? DD2 - What is Berber? DD3 - What is oxymoron? FJ - Who is Hedda Gabler?!<

  • Nishi Kantamneni, a platform engineer originally from Pleasanton, California; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a six-day champ with winnings of $113,699.

Jeopardy!

EYE ON ASIA // WARNING-WORTHY WEATHER // AMBROSE BIERCE'S DEVIL'S DICTIONARY // SMALL BUSINESS // A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING // THE END OF THE REALITY SHOW

DD1 - $400 - A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING - In 1957 Mike Stepovich was sworn in as the last governor of this territory, noy yet a state; he was also the first born there (Tristan improved by $3,000 to $7,000 vs. $5,200 for Anne.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $1,000, Nishi $1,600, Anne $3,800.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $7,000, Nishi $2,000, Anne $5,600.

Double Jeopardy!

IT'S ALL HISTORY // BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS // IN THE NICK OF TIME // TRAVEL & TOURISM // SHE DIRECTED IT // GOOD HANG

DD2 - $1,200 - IT'S ALL HISTORY - A failed attempt to convert a chieftain to Christianity led to this man's death at the Battle of Mactan in 1521 (Tristan dropped $5,000 down to $4,800 vs. $7,200 for Anne.)

DD3 - $1,200 - GOOD HANG - In the atrium of the east building of the National Gallery in Washington hangs a large & gently spinning work by this American artist (Tristan added $3,000 up to $9,000 vs. $8,800 for Anne.)

Tristan missed DD2 and dropped to second behind Anne, regained a short lead on DD3 and held first into FJ at $12,200 vs. $9,600 for Anne and $4,400 for Nishi.

Final Jeopardy!

INSPIRED BY - This 1982 No. 1 hit was inspired by "Splendor in the Grass", a classic film about the failed expectations of teens Wilma & Bud

Only Tristan was correct on FJ, adding $7,001 to win with $19,201 for a seven-day total of $132,900.

Final scores: Tristan $19,201, Nishi $1,700, Anne $0.

Clue selection strategy: In round one, three top-row clues were chosen with the DD still on the board.

Wagering strategy: From a close second in FJ and with more than double of third, with a small wager Anne could have shut out Nishi and won if Tristan missed without having to be correct herself. As it played out, the all-in bet just cost Anne the larger second-place award.

Judging the writers: They went with a useless FJ category, instead of something potentially helpful such as HITS OF THE 80s.

Final Jeopardy!
