Storefront Update: Screensavers!

Hey everyone,

I just pushed an update to Storefront that adds a dedicated screensaver section. You can now browse and download e-ink optimized screensavers directly on your device without needing to plug into a computer.

Highlights

  • Browse on-device: Explore wallpapers across categories like Minimalist, Nature, Sci-Fi, Classic Art, Anime, and more.
  • One-tap downloads: Save wallpapers straight into your screensaver folder so KOReader can display them on sleep.
  • E-ink optimized: Sized and tuned for clear contrast on e-paper screens (both grayscale and color devices).
  • Configure in Storefront: You can set and configure screensavers directly in Storefront.
  • Cache management: Go to the settings menu for more granular cache management/deletion for readmes, wiki, and screensaver thumbnails.
  • Community catalog: If you have wallpapers you would like to share with others, you can submit them to the community gallery.

Submit your own screensavers to the catalog here: https://ultimatejimmy.github.io/storefront-screensavers/

Install

Get it here: https://github.com/ultimatejimmy/storefront.koplugin/releases, here are installation instructions: https://github.com/ultimatejimmy/storefront.koplugin/wiki/1.-Installation

If you already have this plugin and are updating, it should appear automatically or you can force check from Settings -> About Storefront -> Check for updates or the "Check for updates" on the Updates tab.

Storefront: Critical bug, update needed

In my efforts to add features, I accidentally introduced a bug that broke the "Updates" tab. I have a fix ready; unfortunately, you can't use the Updates tab to update this plugin, but there are two other in-app ways:

Option 1: Gear (settings) icon -> About Storefront -> Check for updates -> Update

https://preview.redd.it/1ivynqtmqbfh1.png?width=1020&format=png&auto=webp&s=310bf1543cd4d0689eaa8f47a0417d9afa266ec6

Option 2: Installed -> Storefront -> Versions -> 26.7.25 -> Install 26.7.25

https://preview.redd.it/4duldozkqbfh1.png?width=1181&format=png&auto=webp&s=027fe699ec5dfd48e90baf12bcb13cb32f0e742f

Once on v26.7.25, automatic updates and background catalog fetches will resume normal operation.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience!

Storefront 26.7.24.1: Release Notes viewer, Versions manager, Filtering/Sorting, and Installed tab

Hey everyone! Here is a summary of all the latest features, improvements, and fixes in Storefront since my last post a few days ago.

Versions Tab & Release Management

  • New Versions Tab: View all published releases for any plugin or user patch directly from the repository details page.
  • Dedicated Version Details: Tap any version in the list to open a full-screen view with its complete release notes, release date, and version details.
  • Direct Version Installation: Install any specific release—whether it's the latest version, an older release, or a pre-release build—with a single tap.
  • Ignore Releases: Mark individual versions to be ignored so update notifications won't nudge you for releases you want to skip. An eye icon clearly shows which versions are active or ignored.
  • Pre-Release Updates Toggle: Easily toggle whether pre-release and beta versions are shown in your available versions list, per plugin/patch.

Installed Plugin & Patch Manager

  • Manage Installed Items: Enable, disable, or remove your installed plugins and patches directly from the new Installed tab.
  • Robust Searching & Filtering: Search, sort, and filter your installed items quickly and easily.

New Features & Visual Improvements

  • In-App Image Viewer: Preview README screenshots and images directly inside the reader.
  • Release Notes Viewer: View full release notes for plugins directly within the plugin browser.
  • Filter Bar Toggle: Toggle the search/filter bar on or off whenever you want via a new filter icon on the Plugins, Patches, and Installed tabs.
  • Easy Filter Reset: A "Clear search/filters" button pops up if a search or filter turns up empty, letting you reset everything with a single tap.
  • Better Sorting & Display: Added sorting options.
  • E-Ink Readability Enhancements: Updated text colors to solid black and dark gray for higher contrast, increased font sizes for easier reading on high-DPI screens, and simplified status text.

Performance & Reliability

  • Background Catalog Updates: The catalog now refreshes quietly in the background without blocking the UI, keeping searching, scrolling, and browsing fast and smooth.
  • Gesture Support Restored: Assign KOReader gestures directly to open Storefront using the Storefront: Open action in the Gesture Manager. Also enables this for use with the ZenUI launcher.
  • Speed & Navigation Fixes: Various bug and performance fixes. Thanks to everyone who reported them!

Storefront 26.7.21: No more rate limits and other bug fixes

I promise I won't spam this sub with every release, but due to all the feedback from my post yesterday, there were a lot of testers to help me find bugs and give me feature ideas. I fixed all the biggest bugs in today's release. Here's the summary:

GitHub Rate Limit Fix

  • Hosted Catalog: By default, Storefront now accesses a hosted catalog that updates hourly, so individual users won't run into GitHub API rate limits. This makes browsing noticeably faster and more reliable.
  • Flexible Options: You can still switch back to direct GitHub API fetching and set up a GitHub Personal Access Token if you prefer.

Plugin Matching & Installed Status

  • Accurate Installed Badges: Fixed an issue where multiple plugins sharing the same name (such as forks or community variants) would all show up as Installed. Storefront now precisely matches installed plugins strictly to their specific repository.
  • Better Auto-Matching: Improved plugin author and repository metadata detection for smoother automatic pairing of local plugins.

Settings & Updates

  • Update Channels & About Dialog: Added an About screen displaying your current installed version and allowing you to switch between Stable and Beta update channels. These are update channels for the Storefront app only, but I plan to add an option in the future for updating other plugins to pre-release versions.
  • GitHub Token Input: You can now enter or clear your GitHub personal access token directly inside the Settings menu to help prevent rate-limiting issues if you want to keep using the API, eliminating the need to edit configuration files manually.
  • Clear README Cache: Added a new Clear README Cache button in Settings to free up storage whenever needed.
  • Settings Preservation: Guaranteed that user configuration files are kept intact whenever Storefront updates itself.

README & Visual Enhancements

  • Fixed README Images: Resolved issues with missing or broken README graphics, properly supporting relative image paths, SVG badges, and raw repository links.
  • Icon & UI Cleanup: Polished logo and icon rendering across screens for a cleaner, sharper look.

Storefront: A modern redesign of appstore

[Release] Storefront - A redesigned plugin & patch manager for KOReader

Hey everyone,

I'm excited to announce the initial release of Storefront, a new plugin for KOReader that lets you discover, install, and update community plugins and user patches directly from your device.

This project is a fork of the original appstore.koplugin by omer-faruq as a redesign to refine the interface and user experience.

Key Features

While the original appstore plugin introduced on-device plugin and patch downloading and updating, Storefront expands on the concept with a brand-new design and workflow:

  • Overhauled E-Ink UI: A clean, paginated layout specifically tuned for e-ink contrast, featuring tabbed navigation, update notification badges, and smooth list controls.
  • Unified Plugin & User Patch Browser: Browse both KOReader plugins and user patches (.lua files) with search filtering, sorting, and star thresholds.
  • Built-in Update Tracking: Track updates for all your installed plugins and patches in one place. Storefront compares local and remote commit SHAs, giving you one-tap Update and Reinstall options.
  • In-App README Viewer: Read full GitHub README documentation directly inside KOReader before or after installing a plugin. No need to download the readme or delete the file later
  • Plugin & Patch Management: Easily install, reinstall, or uninstall plugins and user patches.
  • Fast Offline Caching: All repository metadata is saved in a local cache file, keeping list scrolling fast and usable even without an active Wi-Fi connection.

X-Ray 26.7.13.3: Unit Converter and Settings Style Update

Hey everyone,

I've recently released a new update for the KOReader X-Ray plugin. This release introduces a smart unit converter and a redesigned settings card UI.

Smart Unit Conversion

  • Detect and underline measurements: The plugin now scans book text to detect and underline measurements (like distance, speed, weight, temperature, volume, and area) that are not in your configured/native unit system.
  • Interactive popup: Tapping any of these underlined measurements will display a tooltip showing the converted value in your preferred unit system.
  • This feature is configurable or you can just disable it if you don't need/want it
  • This does not rely on AI and works entirely offline
  • It does require a scan, once per book. This is defaulted to scanning automatically or you can trigger this manually.
  • I had an idea to add something this while reading The Martian a couple weeks ago and the next day @Fank1 posted about https://github.com/Fank1/foot-cream with imperial -> metric. I took some of that code/logic/UX and worked it into my vision for this in X-Ray. Credit to Fank1 for his work.

Redesigned Settings Card

  • The settings menu layout and design have been rebuilt from scratch. It functions the same as before, but looks nicer with a consistent design language and modern look and feel.

Bug fixes

  • Fix view log font size
  • fix font size issue when reader font is very large

X-Ray 26.6.22: UI updates, Series Context, AI merge suggestions, and more languages

I've put together a bunch of updates for the KOReader X-Ray plugin since my last post over a month ago. Here is a summary of the main features, improvements, and fixes in the latest releases:

New Features & UI Settings

  • Footnote-style Popup UI: Added a new inline popup style to view character, location, and term descriptions at the bottom of the screen, similar to KOReader’s native footnote previews. This lets you quickly view descriptions without blocking your book view or closing your page. Thanks to u/DisastrousPatience83 for the suggestion and initial code
  • Customizable Lookups: You can toggle the new popup layout independently under Display & UI Settings:
    • Use Footnote Style for In-text Lookups (when tapping a name directly in the book text)
    • Use Footnote Style for Menu Lookups (when selecting an entry from the plugin’s menus, like the character list or glossary)
  • Prior Series Context: The plugin can now detect if your book is part of a series and ask if you want to pull context from prior books.
  • New AI Models & Provider Organization: Added support for the new Gemini 3 models, updated DeepSeek model compatibility, and reorganized the AI model settings menu by provider so it's easier to find and switch between them.
  • Glossary & Mentions Improvements:
    • The Glossary view now uses separate, tailored logic depending on whether you are reading fiction or non-fiction.
    • Added a manual Book Type setting so you can override the fiction/non-fiction detection if it gets it wrong.
    • Polished the Mentions layout: the mentions navigation bar is now at the bottom, and word highlighting has been added.

UI Tweaks & Performance Improvements

  • Refined Interface Styling: Improved button spacing, text box padding, and font scaling in both the classic and new popup layouts for better readability on various e-ink and Android screen resolutions.
  • Setting Menu Reorganization: Grouped settings by category for a cleaner experience
  • No More UI Freezes: Fixed the issues that caused brief freezes or lags during background operations.
  • Settings folder cleanup: Improved how language settings are stored and added automatic cleanup for old temporary files in the settings folder.

New Translations & Bug Fixes

  • Added official language support for Dutch, Hungarian, Indonesian, and Polish.
  • Cleaned up the language settings logic and user interface.
  • Fixed unexpected network popups.
  • Improved background logic

X-Ray Plugin 26.5.12.1

It's been a couple weeks since I posted an update, but there have been multiple rounds of updates since then. Here are the highlights:

New Features

  • Linked Entries: This helps with keeping track of complex casts by automatically detecting when characters, locations, or historical figures are mentioned in each other's descriptions. A new Linked Entries button will appear in the entry view if related people or places are found, letting you jump between them instantly. (You can turn this off in the settings if you want.)
  • Mention Navigation: Improved the "Find Mentions" feature with a new navigation bar. You can now cycle through every mention of a character or location and easily jump back to your original reading spot when you're done.

https://preview.redd.it/fam0ckdhar0h1.png?width=598&format=png&auto=webp&s=4000374bca33215a7b10df9fdd4ee8661623c5fc

  • Expanded AI Support: Support for DeepSeek and Claude has been added. These are technically in beta as I haven't been able to test them robustly yet, so feedback and user testing are very much appreciated. You can also now use any OpenAI-compatible API (like OpenRouter) by configuring your own endpoints.
  • Customization Tools: You can now choose the length of AI-generated summaries to fit your screen, and use the new Merge Tool to clean up duplicate character entries.
  • Beta Update Channel: You can now opt into the Beta Channel in the plugin settings to receive pre-release updates automatically. To try it, go to X-Ray Settings -> Plugin Settings and switch the Update Channel to Beta.

Improvements and Logic

  • Smarter Fetching: Manual options are now unified into a single "Update X-Ray Data" item. The plugin intelligently detects if it needs a full new fetch or just an incremental update.
  • Connection Stability: Timeouts have been increased to 10 minutes to support heavy reasoning models like DeepSeek R1. I’ve also added a Cancel button if you need to stop a fetch.
  • Clearer Feedback: Improved error messages when a fetch fails, providing more helpful and actionable feedback.
  • Battery Life: Disabled background scanning for mentions to save battery and processing power.
  • Better Data: Refined historical figure identification to reduce fictional false positives.

Fixes and Stability

  • API Reliability: Fixed the "Bad Request" errors on GPT models and data truncation issues with Gemini. Inline lookups should also be much more stable now.
  • Alias Detection: Improved how nicknames and aliases are identified while ignoring honorifics and cleaning up redundant name fragments.
  • Future Proofing: Updated the dictionary button code for future KOReader updates.

I'm not posting all the updates here on Reddit to avoid spamming, but this one was meaningful with the "Mentions" feature. I hope you like it!

Features:

Entity Mentions The biggest change is the addition of a mentions list. You can now see every time a character or place is mentioned in your book and jump right to that page. I've also made it so the menus close automatically once you jump, which makes it much faster to get back to your book.

In-text fetching If you highlight a name and they aren't in the cache yet, you can fetch that one person/place right in the highlight menu.

Fixes/enhancements:

AI and GPT Support The backend has been updated to better handle OpenAI models like GPT-4o. The communication with the AI is now more standardized, which makes it more reliable and fixes some issues with token limits and 400 errors.

Stability There was a lot of internal refactoring to clean up the code. It should be faster and more stable overall.

I haven't been posting every release on Reddit (I don't want to spam), but this was a bigger release. Let me know if you have any questions!

Release Notes - Version 26.4.27: Mentions

This update introduces several major features and quality-of-life improvements to make your X-Ray experience smoother, faster, and more localized.

New Features & Enhancements

Entity Mentions & Navigation

You can now see exactly where characters and locations appear throughout your book. The new "Mentions" feature provides a list of occurrences, allowing you to jump directly to that specific page. We've also polished the navigation so that menus close automatically when you jump, getting you back to your reading immediately.

Improved GPT & AI Compatibility

We've standardized the way the plugin communicates with OpenAI models. This update includes better handling for newer models like GPT-4o, improved token management to prevent errors, and a more robust fallback system to ensure your requests always go through.

Smarter Background Fetching

The "inline fetching" logic has been overhauled to be less intrusive. Data for new chapters is now merged more efficiently in the background, significantly reducing the "freezing" or lag that could occur on older hardware like the Kindle Paperwhite when the plugin was busy fetching new insights.

Performance & Stability

Under the hood, we've completed a major refactoring of the plugin's architecture. This makes the code faster, more reliable, and easier for us to maintain, ensuring a more stable experience on all devices.

Bug Fixes

Resolved potential crashes related to multi-byte character handling in AI responses.

Fixed inconsistent token limit settings for various AI models.
