Preorders for the US and Canada-compatible Dumber Mini are now open

Good news for our US and Canadian fans - we have just started preorders for the North American version of Dumber Mini!

We're planning to have 3000 phones manufactured by the end of November, and half of these will be the North American model. From our initial assessment, the phones should be compatible with T-Mobile in the US. Information on Canadian carriers will be added as soon as we have prototype units that we can test.

Update regarding support for Norwegian BankID and Vipps.

BankID has recently introduced a new authentication method by scanning a physical ID (photo and NFC). Initial tests indicate that this doesn't work on the Dumber Mini. We're investigating whether this is something we can fix, and we'll also be in touch with the BankID team.

On the other hand, Vipps works totally fine now, including tap-to-pay on the Dumber Mini. However, it has had a difficult history with degoogled phones, so there are no guarantees here.

There is growing political pressure to get these two apps to properly support degoogled phones, so hopefully things will improve in the future.

All Dumber Mini preorders expected to ship by mid-June

Hi DumberOS fans,

I'm happy to let you know that we'll receive our first batch of 1000 phones quite a bit earlier than planned. Our initial estimate was very conservative to account for possible delays, but as of now everything seems to be moving ahead of schedule - we've been told the shipment should leave China by the end of May.

Of course, nothing is certain until the phones actually arrive at our UK warehouse, so we'll keep you updated if anything changes.

We still have about 400 phones left to sell from the incoming batch, so if you are thinking about preordering, it is safe to do so within the next few weeks. Once we run out, we'll be making another order for 3000 phones, half of which will be destined for the North American market. These are estimated to be ready by the end of November.

Here are some sample photos I took today. The last one was taken with the front camera.

Personally I'm happy with the camera and I use it to snap family pictures, it's noticeably better than the Doov R77 pro. One thing that I don't like is that if there is a lot of blue sky in the frame, then the photo will have a dark-blue tint, which you can see in a couple of the pictures. Second is that unfortunately there is no orientation sensor, so if you take landscape photos, then you have to rotate them manually. We're looking into some kind of neural-net classifier to do this automatically.
