Sand Casting a Silver Ring
Hey, I wanted to share some of my progress making a ring with y'all! This community has taught me a ton about metalworking and it's really cool to be able to go from lurking to having something to show.
Context: my friend from decades ago reconnected with me and asked if I'd make him a ring! I've made a dozen or so silver rings so far, but none this big (size 15)
I was hasty with the mold, fighting off mosquitos while I shaped it, and I paid for rushing in time grinding out the flash, but ultimately I'm really happy with how it turned out.
I've experimented with smaller and smaller sprues and I've started trying to pour without any sprue at all. That didn't pan out here as I added a little more sterling at the last minute 'just in case'. Foolishness, but I'm all about working with happy accidents!
In general my idea is to pour the ring then do as little as possible to it, I let it be imperfect and strange, and I don't try to be a better artisan than whatever accidents shape the metal. Hope you enjoy!
