Looking for more info on VPS

A friend of mine recently recommended using a VPS as a way to create a secure tunnel to my own home server for gaming servers. In the research I've done since, it seems that it would make it work similar to how a privacy VPN does, by exposing the VPS IP to the public, and keeping my own home IP safe. It seems like all I would need to do is setup the VPS with wireguard or something similar, which would then forward any requests to my homelab server. Is this accurate? I am new to most of this stuff, so I'm looking for the following:

Is this even a good idea, or are there better safer options?

If it's possible what VPS would be recommended? I've seen several VPS providers come highly recommended on here, but most of the time people are recommending them for more intense things like actual server hosting or file shares and stuff like that.

What are the potential risks that can come from this, and is there anything I should consider on the homelab to ensure my home network and personal devices remain secure?

For context the home server I would be running is a Dell Poweredge R640 that I received for free.
