VPX Standalone Update August 19, 2026

VPX Standalone Update August 19, 2026

We're still waiting for AtGames to release the latest beta firmware that enables VPX scores on the leaderboard displayed in the backglass. About half the testers got the update before it was pulled. The public release of VPX will follow the public release of the beta firmware.

In the background, I've been preparing the infrastructure to handle the increased load of a public release and that work is mostly done. The team has been working on documentation and tutorial videos as well as continuing to add more and more tables to the repo.

Additionally, we've opened up beta testing to the HDP and initial feedback is positive. I need more HDP testers, so if you have an HDP and want to participate in the beta please join our Discord https://discord.gg/nHRh6TqPNT and reply to the HDP thread in #general-vpxs-chat.

Discord is a requirement for the beta. Public releases will not require Discord.

August 1, 2026 VPX Standalone Update

UPDATE: 5:23pm EST AtGames has pulled the firmware update from production and it's now back to beta only. There are still some issues with it and it's still in testing. If you've already updated and everything works.. you're fine. If not, AtGames suggests factory resetting. If you haven't accepted the update yet but there's a notification, reboot your cabinet.

Original Message:

Well, AtGames YOLO'd the beta firmware straight into production. The latest beta firmware when I went to bed was 6.1.28 and now I wake up and everyone is on 6.1.30. There were some specific fixes requested in 6.1.28 and I need time to validate them on 6.1.30. The good news... the HDP also got a firmware update to 1.0.30 which adds General Loader 2.0. I've already implemented a few workarounds for the missing GL2.0 on the HDP and we did get VPX working successfully on the HDP. While the underlying hardware is the same, the display ordering completely changed and we needed to make a bunch of changes across the board to support the HDP.

Barring any launch blockers with the new firmwares, we should see VPX released to stable in ~2 weeks. I hate providing dates, and it's subject to change depending on my real life schedule, but I should be able to make this happen.

For those hesitant to upgrade firmware, we've been running the 6.1.28 firmware for a month with no issues. VPX Standalone will require the new firmware and also requires connectivity to the internet at least once every 2 weeks. The Table Manager (how you get VPX Tables on your cabinet requires internet while running. If this is a problem, then VPX Standalone is not the right solution for you.

Thanks everyone for your patience, but I can assure you VPX Standalone on the 4KP (and now HDP) will have been well worth the wait!

VPX Standalone update July 19, 2026

The General Loader 2.0 version of VPX Standalone has been released to the beta testers yesterday after a few weeks of internal testing. The old General Loader 1.0 version has been officially retired and I'm no longer releasing updates for it.

The AtGames firmware that's been in beta for the past month or so still has issues and AtGames has yet to release any updates. VPX Standalone is ready, but will not be released until the firmware it requires is released publicly. I'm hopeful we will get a beta with all the reported issues fixed soon so we can have a public release finally after all this time!

I also realize that I didn't post my earlier update from July 6, 2026 which I posted to Facebook, so here it is:

>VPX Standalone update July 6, 2026

AtGames has released General Loader 2.0 into beta. I've reported multiple issues with General Loader 1.0 in various forums stating the reason VPX Standalone can't be released publicly. AtGames has apparently been following (their spies be everywhere) and has implemented the most critical block features.

Work has begun on porting the codebase to the new General Loader 2.0. For the technical, there's not really an SDK per se needed to make apps for the 4KP, but their sandbox permission model severely restricts an apps ability to do basically anything. So various workarounds were implemented to bypass this security, which obviously isn't great for a public release. I've had to roll these workarounds back and rewrite the code to work with the restricted permission set without removing features in Table Manager and VPX itself.

As of today, Table Manager and VPX have been ported to General Loader 2.0 and I've released it to the team. There are also notable changes to the permissions for the GPU and we can now take advantage of hardware acceleration so we're currently working on doing this in VPX. We have a ton of tables now hitting 60fps (max on the 4KP) and the GPU changes are looking promising for increased performance of PUP packs.

The team has been a bit burnt out lately waiting for these General Loader 2.0 changes to finally roll out and dealing with the haters and negative comments that it's not released yet. So it's been a bit slow getting everyone back into working on it, but it's happening.

And just a reminder, we still don't have an HDP machine so only the 4KP is supported. Developing something like VPX requires modifying the hardware to debug what's happening since there is absolutely no logging when things go wrong... you're flying blind if you don't have a modified cabinet. I appreciate all the offers to test on the HDP, but that's just not going to work.

Anyway, we're getting close. Please do not enroll in the beta in anticipation of getting VPX working. I've reached out to AtGames and I'd like to coordinate the release of VPX with the public release of the new firmware (there are issues that should be fixed).

For quite some time now I have objected publicly to AtGames charging for External Applications while having no formal developer program, documentation, or even support for developers to actually develop for this platform. I've said multiple times that until AtGames removes the fees for External Applications, I would not be making VPX Standalone public and folks would need to join Discord, participate, etc.

The reasons for this were simple. I didn't want people paying $100 to AtGames for work me and my team were doing completely free. The team has poured hundreds, if not thousands, of hours making VPX Standalone work on the 4KP without any documentation or help from AtGames.

I know you've all been frustrated by my stance, but if nobody stands up... we all fall down.

Given this announcement, I will be working over the next few weeks to remove all online requirements and move to an offline DRM system. From the start of this project, protecting the rights and wishes of the Virtual Pinball community has been my priority and drive sellers are not welcome!

Once the DRM is moved offline, I'll be releasing VPX Standalone for the ALP 4KP for free and graduating it from it's Beta status. Please don't harass me and my team for release dates, we all have day jobs and families and that's always priority #1. I can assure you, it won't be too long and the wait will be worthwhile.

Nobody on the team owns an ALP HDP, and the way VPX needs to be initialized and configured requires hardware. For this reason, VPX Standalone will only work on the ALP 4KP at this time. If AtGames decides they want to provide ALP HDP hardware to me and my team, we'll gladly support the device.
