Boot vs fiberglass cast

I am 2 weeks post ORIF surgery of a trimal fracture. 10 screws 2 plates. They took my split off and the sutures out yesterday. Gave me a walking boot but still NWB for 2 weeks. I am having an incredibly hard time tolerating the boot. It puts pressure right where the incisions are and I’m assuming where my hardware is. The surgeon said i can switch to a fiberglass cast for 2 weeks and then go back into the boot to start partial weight bearing and PT. Said it doesn’t change my time line of recovery. Has anyone done this??

I am so discouraged that i can’t tolerate the boot. I wasn’t expecting this at all and am very sad about it. I have 3 kids 4 yo and under so i can’t really take the boot off safely without risk of one of them jumping on me or knocking my leg by accident.

I just don’t know if I’m going to regret going into a fiberglass cast. My boot is supposed to be on at all times other than showering, so it’s not like i can sleep without it anyways.

Cast to boot pain

I had a trimal fracture 3 weeks ago. ORIF with 10 screws and 2 plates 2 weeks ago. Got my cast off today and stitches out. WTF. I was not prepared for how much getting stitches removed hurts. I nearly passed out. Anyways, they switched me to a boot today & i cannot believe how much it hurts. Is this normal?? I had been basically counting down the seconds for the hard cast to come off for the past 3 weeks. Why does this hurt so bad? I’m so sad

Broken fibula and Malleolus

Someone tell me I’ll get my normal life back

A few days into my highly anticipated family vacation i tripped, dislocated my ankle and broke my fibula and Malleolus. I am from Ohio & we were 12 hours north on an island in Canada. I have a 4 yo, 2yo & 4 month old.

I was walking from one sleep cabin to the other through a pathway in the woods. I am 4 months post partum and was holding my spectra pump, pumping while walking to get my 2 year old up from his nap. I took a side step to take a photo of the cabin he was sleeping in. Literally so stupid. I’ve been going to our cottage for 34 years. Didn’t need that photo in any way. I tripped on a rock, dislocated my ankle and broke my fibula.

I was screaming for help. My bone was visibly going the opposite direction. My dad and husband had to lift me into a wagon to get me into the trunk of my dad’s car to speed to the nearest tiny hospital 30 minutes away. My ankle was popping in and out of place the whole ride and the bone was shifting back and fourth. I’m traumatized. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same.

The ER did a closed reduction and back cast and told me to get home to Ohio asap for surgery. My ENTIRE family had to leave our lake house to help us get home. My parents, my aunt, my husband & my three kids.

Saw a surgeon Friday night. Said i need hardware asap but can’t operate until swelling goes down. I feel like i ruined my entire life. I have kids that need me and depend on me. We spend our summer days at pools and parks out and about all day every day. I now cannot do anything. I can’t even get my baby out of the crib. Luckily i can hold him and feed him all day, but i am useless to the toddlers. I’m useless to my husband and my family.

Someone tell me this isn’t the end for me & i will eventually walk and be fine again. I feel like my future is so daunting. I am a generally very happy person. Never felt this type of guilt, sadness, regret and mostly FOMO in my life.

TL;DR: broke my ankle 4 months post partum and have 2 other young kids. Ruined my whole family’s vacation. Waiting for swelling to go down for surgery. Feeling down and lost.
