Is the drive really scary through rhe SR-9 with the switch backs and Mount Carmel tunnel?

Would we be wasting time and missing out if going to Bryce I take the 15 instead then coming back to Zion take the 89 trough SR-9 so at least we're on the mountain side?

I don't wanna put my family through that ordeal twice but still wanna experience it once.
