I wish

I wish you knew me before I went to war
Before I went to Afghanistan
I was a good person
A good worker, an excellent manager
I was a good neighbour, kept my lawn neat
A good bloke, down the beach, down the footy club, helped mum, helped Mrs Grey across the road with her gutters, kept them clean.
A good husband. A good dad, to a little girl, the most perfect little girl.

Then I went, weekend warrior, then I came back, full time baked
With a next level tan
And some bloody medal
And a little pice of metal
With 2 words of pushti and one in Arabic
And
7 kilos lighter because I left my heart there
And Mum was gone, and the lawn was gone. The footy club was there. The beach was there. My old job was there. But they were meant for a different person.
Then your mother left and you left. And my mates left.

When the dreams started the meds started. The day drinking and the bad living started.

That’s stupid bloody woman at the supermarket , that stupid dogooder social worker.
Those stupid old dickheads at the RSL

I wish you knew me before I went to war.

A buddy of mine is stationed in Chernobyl. He sent this on to me earlier today. He said it was pretty quiet around town.

The ribbon on the vase says 40 years.
