Budget DSLR/Mirrorless Purchase?

I have been shooting for the past couple years with an old Canon Rebel film camera. Although I've enjoyed the camera, I want to make a digital purchase (film is unsustainably expensive for me). I'm looking for a used camera which is strong in variable lighting, isn't massive, and has a large lense market. My budget for a camera body is around $300. I've been looking at some bodies like the Sony A7i, the Canon T6i, and some others. I would appreciate any recommendations, as well as thoughts between the two options I have listed. Thanks!
