Worried about missing the vigili urbani (residency police check)
Hey everyone,
I recently submitted my residence permit application here in Italy under motivi familiari (family cohesion) living with my brother, and I’ve got my white postal receipt (ricevuta assicurata).
I was told it will take about 3 months for the Questura to fully process the permit, but before that happens, the local municipal police (vigili urbani) are supposed to do a physical check (controllo di dimora) at my brother's place to verify I actually live there.
I definitely live there, but the issue is that I’m often out during the day for work. I know they usually show up unannounced during daytime hours, and I'm stressed about missing them. I wanted to ask:
- After how long do they usually come for the first visit after you submit your residency application?
- If I'm not home at the first visit, how long will it take for them to do the next visit? Do they come back in a few days, or can it drag out for weeks?
- Since my brother will be there, can he just talk to them and prove I live there, or do I have to be physically present?
- If they miss you a couple of times, do they automatically reject it, or do they give you a chance to clear it up?
Would really appreciate hearing how others managed this timeline if you're out during the day!
