1st few days

I picked up 6 (false) Julii corydoras on Saturday and man they’re oddball behavior has been a rollercoaster. Basically every weird thing I’ve noticed I can find a thread on here that says “yep, they’re little weirdos and that’s normal”. I love them, but wow, I’m hoping I can settle down and stop thinking they’re having problems when they’re just being their little weirdos selves- literally what drew me to them in the first place!

This video is from the first morning after I got them when I was certain something was wrong but of course, they were just resting and hiding, after feeding them I was then looking up “is zooming around after eating normal?!” 😂😩

End of cycling nitrate spike

I’m at the end of the cycling process, it’s been over 6 weeks, 14g cube, planted and fishless. Tank can process ammonia and nitrite to zero in about 24 hours (hint of blue in nitrite), yesterday I tested and had a huge nitrate spike 40-80ppm (hard to tell which), so I did a 75% water change in the evening. This morning I tested and it’s 10-20ppm (again hard to tell and I didn’t take a photo unfortunately). My question is should I do another water change to get it lower today? And how much?

5/13 doses fertilizer and scraped some algae, dosed ammonia
5/14 ammonia, nitrite ~0, nitrate 5. Dosed ammonia
5/15 ammonia, nitrite ~0, nitrate 40-80, 75% water change
5/16 ammonia, nitrite 0, nitrate 10-20

I found this aquarium for free on Craigslist. I looked up what it is and it’s a marineland aquarium products eclipse pfes 12 gallon acrylic tank. I’ve never had this brand or an acrylic tank so wondering if they are good?
I cleaned it and have it filled with water to see if it leaks. I’m thinking I don’t need to keep the lid/rim/filter set up since it’s acrylic? Or would I still need the rim if I’m going to set anything on it like lights or a filter?
(I’m currently cycling a tank and was wanting to set up a secondary one at some point)
