Yesterday evening, Senate Bill 504 by Sen. Warren Hamilton of McCurtain (R-7) and Rep. Nicole Miller of Edmond (R-82), a bill to eliminate all current statutory exemptions for the marriage of persons under the age of 18, passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives by a vote of 51-36.
This was the last legislative hurdle SB504 had to pass, with it passing the Senate Judiciary Committee by a vote of 7-0 on February 10th, the Senate by a vote of 45-0 on March 25th, the House Civil Judiciary Committee by a vote of 8-0 on April 2nd, and the House Judiciary and Public Safety Oversight Committee by a vote of 10-1 on April 14th. After passing the House yesterday evening, SB504 goes to Governor Kevin Stitt's desk for his signature or veto.
There is no denying that there are happy and healthy marriages in Oklahoma that would be denied under the age of 18 once SB504 becomes law. However, the vast majority of these marriages involving children did not go as well, with some of these alleged "safeguard" exceptions even facilitating human trafficking. This is a bill that will absolutely protect children.
Despite this, 36 Oklahoma Representatives voted no on SB504. They are:

This State Legislature prides itself on its willingness to protect children, and SB504 does exactly that. Yet these 36 state legislators choose to bury their heads in the sand, choose to ignore the problem of child sex trafficking, and vote against this bill.
I do not doubt that a majority of Oklahomans are in favor of eliminating the exceptions that allow for child marriage. Attached above is a map showing the districts where representatives voted in favor of SB504 (in green), voted against SB504 (in red), did not vote on SB504 (in yellow), and vacant seats (in white). If you reside in a district represented by one of these Representatives, ask yourself whether they represent your community this November.
