Weekly Open Discussion Thread

Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread!

This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.

If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.

What’s at Stake at the W Champions Cup

Someone posted this in the post match thread and I thought it could be useful to have on its own thread.

Some context on what is at stake with the Concacaf W Champions Cup next week.

“MIAMI – Concacaf has confirmed the qualification pathway for its member clubs to reach FIFA-organized global women’s club competitions through the Concacaf W Champions Cup, the region’s premier tournament featuring top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The pathway

The Concacaf W Champions Cup will remain the sole route for clubs in the region to qualify for FIFA’s global women’s club competitions.

Allocated slots

Concacaf has been allocated 2.5 slots for the quadrennial FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, with the first edition scheduled for 2028.

These berths will be distributed among the winners of the 2024/25, 2025/26, and 2027 editions of the Concacaf W Champions Cup. Gotham FC has already secured one of those places by winning the 2024/25 edition.

The winner of the 2025/26 Concacaf W Champions Cup Finals will also qualify to the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup 2027.

Further details on the allocation of the remaining FIFA Women’s Club World Cup and FIFA Women’s Champions Cup qualification slots will be confirmed at a later date.

2025/26 Concacaf W Champions Cup

The current edition is entering its decisive stage, with the 2025/26 Concacaf W Champions Cup Finals — consisting of the semifinals, third-place match, and final — scheduled from May 20 to May 23.

The semifinal matchups are:
Club América Femenil vs. Gotham FC
Washington Spirit vs. CF Pachuca Femenil

FIFA global women’s competitions

FIFA Women’s Club World Cup

The inaugural edition will feature 19 clubs. Six teams — one from each confederation (AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC, and UEFA) — will compete in a play-in round, with three advancing to join 13 others in the group stage.

FIFA Women’s Champions Cup

The FIFA Women’s Champions Cup will bring together the six continental champions from the preceding season. Following its debut with the 2026 edition, the second edition will culminate with its semifinals and final from January 27–31, 2027.”
