Partially eclipsed sun setting, Puerto Sóller, Mallorca 12 August 2016

I travelled to Mallorca to see the total solar eclipse and got treated to a magnificent sunset featuring a partially eclipsed sun. Unfortunately clouds obscured totality itself, which happened to me during my first total eclipse in 1999 too! Fingers crossed for third time lucky in mainland Spain next year...

Does taking collagen actually do anything?

Now I have bought a couple of protein drinks the algorithm thinks I want to have every other "nutritional supplement" as well and I am being bombarded with adverts for collagen supplements that will "help with skin elasticity". I am very sceptical of such claims — if my skin has stretched beyond its elastic limit surely the only way to reduce it is via surgery? And doesn't the body create collagen from protein in your diet? Is there any actual evidence that taking collagen improves skin elasticity?

(Why yes I am a scientist)

New Ruby Franke documentary on BBC

Devil in the Family. Oof, it's a doozy. There's new footage supplied by the family and extensive interviews with Chad, Shari and Kevin.

This is such a bizarre feeling

I did my first full dose on Sunday (I took a dose the previous Sunday but I know now I buggered it up and didn't take a full dose) and oh my, what a weird feeling I have. Kicked in maybe yesterday (Monday) dinner time and I realised I wasn't spending the hour before dinner time watching the clock count down. I just wasn't hungry and didn't fancy anything. It's such a bizarre feeling! Is this how "normal" people are? It's now Tuesday afternoon and still no hunger, no intrusive thoughts, no scavenging in the fridge. I don't feel full or bloated or ill. I'm just not hungry. Is it witchcraft??!

Ardalanish Bay, Isle of Mull

Lovely big garnets (almandine I think) and some excellent folding. And just some general views because it's such an beautiful locality. Rocks are the Ardalanish Striped Formation.

Just taken first dose

I'm really really apprehensive. All I can think of is what if it didn't work? There's got to be a few it doesn't work for, right?? I don't know what I'll do if it doesn't.

I'm 50, 5'6" and weighed in at 255 pounds yesterday ☹️ I'm trying not to pin all my hopes on this. I started on a half dose because of my fear of side effects and have bought in protein powder, bran flakes, a lot of chicken and plenty of fruit. Will I stop craving chocolate? Will I be able to resist the cakes in the work canteen? My head is buzzing with all this worry and stress. Please let it all be with it....

EDIT: I have severe emetophobia, a phobia of vomiting. Those there "mild" side effects are about the worst thing that could happen to me (and I've had a brain tumour 😬)

EDIT 2: I took the full dose. Thanks for the kick up the bum

Which serial killer am I thinking of?

I'm re-watching the Netflix documentary on the LISK caw right now and every time I hear about this case I remember another documentary I saw a while ago that I always get mixed up with this case. Can anyone tell me which it is? I think it's unsolved. It was in the USA and there were around four female victims who were all found bound (I want to say hogtied but maybe just hands) and dumped in drainage ditches. They weren't skeletonised as far as I remember. Have I dreamed it?

Alex Murdaugh sentence overturned

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cedpvnq7wn1o

"In a 5-0 ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court said Murdaugh deserved a new trial because the local county clerk had unfairly biased a jury against him. "

Was this covered in a Patreon??I feel like it has been but I'm not sure. Anyway, I imagine most of us turkeys know about this case....
