Underrated funny lines/bits in TTOI
Quotes/bits of dialogue you rarely see on here, but also interested in hearing your favourite physical comedy bits (including facial reactions).
I love this line — and I love this little chat, too. It's a relatively rare moment where you can see the affection between Glenn and Ollie. Even though Ollie's taking the piss — and the idea of Glenn being "big in Japan" is so funny.
Edit: I see this has been covered before (I Googled "he's brought his own olives") but, as my dear mother used to say, let's run a few ideas up the flagpole and see who gets wood. https://www.reddit.com/r/thethickofit/comments/1houvcm/what_is_a_slepton_line_that_doesnt_get_enough/
Quotes that live rent free in your baby new potato head?
I'd particularly like to hear about quotes that you routinely use in your day-to-day life, either out loud or in your fucking fat, unelectable, smug head.
I went to a jazz concert the other night at the South Bank. The band's drummer (who was great) would occasionally have nothing to do, and would just sit there with an impassive — but slightly melancholy — expression on his face.
Whenever this happened, I would inwardly recite "he looks like how I feel when I visit Sheffield", and inappropriately smile and smirk.
You go for post work drinks with 3/4 characters: who are you picking?
You probably wouldn't want to be FRIENDS with most of them, since they're more or less a "shower of cunts". But they COULD be wildly entertaining to chat with down the pub (ideally not in Motherwell) for a few hours.
Alternative social gathering suggestions are welcome. Going to the test match with Julius, Glenn and Malcolm, for example, or fly fishing in Zimbabwe with Julius, Stephen Fry, and Paxo. Motherwell match with Jamie and Robin.
Did anyone else find Fergus the least funny character in TTOI?
Not intending to attack Geoffrey Streatfield, who I'm sure has comic chops. But whenever I rewatch TTOI I always find Fergus the weakest character by far.
I dunno if he's just underwritten or if it's that they directed him to go as over the top as possible. The series he appears in is generally much more over the top than the previous series, so perhaps he had to slot into that larger than life ensemble?
I liked Adam, though, he somehow didn't seem as jarring.
The other character that underwhelmed me (and others on here, so I've seen) was THE FUCKER. I love Tom Hollander in "In the Loop" (and in general) and I guess he was playing against type here but he wasn't a very funny character IMO. The other characters' reactions to him were funnier. Perhaps (again) that was the point?
There are other characters who aren't massively funny but these two stick out to me as rare missteps in a generally almost-perfect show.
