Daniel Chen: Maple MAGA, Burnaby First Candidate for City Council.

Hey r/burnaby,

With the municipal elections coming up, I’ve been doing some research on the candidates running for city council. I took a look into the public X (Twitter) and Facebook profiles of Daniel Chen, who is running with the Burnaby First team, and found some public posts that voters might want to know about before heading to the polls.

From what I’ve gathered, his online footprint leans heavily into what many would call right wing territory. I’ve downloaded multiple screenshots and videos of his posts, and I've broken down the main themes below:

Climate Change: He has shared content explicitly dismissing climate change as "Climate Hysteria" 1948 Fraser Valley post as well as a video about solar winds causing climate change

Pro-Trump & US Politics: saying Trump opponents are worse than whatever Trump has done

Anti-Ukraine

Anti-Muslim Rhetoric: "Islam is a fire, fed by gasoline"

Cryptocurrency / Bitcoin: incoherent money stuff.]

Local elections often fly under the radar, but city council decisions impact our community directly. I think it’s important that we know the values and public stances of the people asking for our votes.

Has anyone else seen these posts or looked into the other Burnaby First candidates?

New Burnaby Candidate David Xie says he couldn't take his name off the ballot, despite never actually requesting to be removed.

David Xie said he was no longer seeking the city council position with the New Burnaby Party and would run for MLA with the BC Conservatives. However, he said it was too late to take his name off. This lead to a possibility of being elected to both positions which is illegal. He would then have to resign from one leading to a costly byelection.

He said it was too late for him to take his name off the ballot. But it is allowed, he just conveniently didn't try.

Freshnet News has published the results of the questionaires they sent to every candidate for mayor, city council and schoolboard

One thing that really stood out for me was that the Restore Burnaby (right wing) party didn't even treat the school board questions seriously by submitting the same answer for the last 6 questions for all of their candidates. Some of their answers didn't even answer the question.

Burnaby Municipal Elections

Burnaby Municipal Elections October 17th. Three parties to the right/conservative side of the Burnaby Citizens Association. Is that enought to take them out? Or are they just going to end up splitting the vote? Of the other four parties New Burnaby has an incumbent city councillor Richard Lee and probably has the best chance to get any seats.
