I think empty spaces in games are scarier than actual monsters

A lot of horror games stop being scary once you finally see the enemy.

But games where nothing is happening?
Those stay in my head way longer.

Just walking through an abandoned area with weird ambient noise and feeling like the game is hiding something from you.

Old Minecraft caves used to feel like that for me as a kid.

Especially when you suddenly stopped hearing music.

What kind of enemies make a game world feel more mysterious?

Not necessarily the strongest enemies, but the ones that make you wonder what happened in that world.

Do you prefer monsters that are clearly explained, or creatures that feel like they have a hidden backstory?
