Avoiding unwell passengers

Yesterday while riding the Red line I had a man approach me. He seemed unwell (maybe drugs/alcohol, mental health problems), and I acknowledged him simply. He then pulled me into a conversation that was unintelligible and started video taping me and touching me. He heavily implied that he would follow me home or take me home with him. Luckily I was able to lose him at my connection to the Orange line

So this leads me to ask - how do you all avoid situations like this? Or how do you respond when it does?

My survival instinct was to try and be nice and de-escalate the whole time by maintaining a calm demeanor, but I think my engagement only made it worse. The whole experience was pretty scary, and I want to feel more prepared if this happens again
