Bricked Surface Laptop 7 right out of warranty

So I bought a snapdragon surface laptop 7 in March of last year. I loved it. Closest thing to a mac as far as premium build quality I have ever seen. Loved the trackpad, the speakers were great, super fast, really awesome machine. I took great care of it and it hardly leaved my bedside.

Last week I decided to see if it needed any windows updates and there were, so I installed them. As soon as they were done I shut the lid and went to bed. The next day I went to use it and it wouldn't turn on. It just flashes the windows icon 2 or 3 times quickly before it goes dark for good. It does nothing when not plugged in. If I hit the power button and the windows icon starts flashing, if I unplug it right away, it stops doing anything immediately, so really seems like something odd going on with firmware or some sort of hardware failure. Holding down the volume buttons while restarting does nothing. It won't boot to bios or anything. I downloaded the surface recovery image tool but that did nothing.

It is so annoying it died just a couple months out of warranty. I contacted support and they said they would check with a "higher support team" to see if they can offer a complimentary repair, but they quickly responded saying there is nothing they can do.

I voiced my displeasure that they can't stand behind a premium product that seems to be bricked by a windows update as soon as the warranty was over and predictably I have not heard back.

So #1: watch out for bricked surface laptops as soon as the warranty is up. #2 has anybody had any luck getting Microsoft to repair a device that is barely out of warranty? they want $540 (!!!) to send it in and fix it.
