Criterion releasing Sofia’s Marie Antoinette 4K in November!

“Sofia Coppola brings a candy-colored palette, a dreamy synth-pop soundtrack, and Converse high-tops to eighteenth-century Versailles for this exuberantly subversive, extravagantly stylized anti-biopic of one of history’s most infamous (and perhaps misunderstood) figures. Kirsten Dunst portrays Marie Antoinette as a rebellious teenage princess, who marries the awkward young dauphin of France (Jason Schwartzman), soon to be crowned King Louis XVI. Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defies both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star—which can work for only so long.”

Release date is November 10th, 2027.

For so many years I have dreamt of this day.

I remember watching Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 in theaters when they were first released, wishing and hoping for this! Now it’s finally here, and on physical media!
Anyone else receive theirs yet?

Looks like Joji has tattoos of Medusa’s severed head, and another castle.

So tbh this film piqued my interest because it’s mentioned in the Gilmore girls revival, and after a few years of rewatches finally decided to look it up. Only to find it has a Criterion release, naturally added it to my wishlist and saved for a flash sale. Cut to March’s flash sale, and snagged it as a blind buy. Feeling a tad under the weather today and staying in, figured this would be a worthwhile watch.

Did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. The dialogue was incredible, and the actors’ deliveries were astounding - especially this bar scene with the main character Erica and her girlfriends. Also funny enough, one of the supporting characters was played by a young Kelly Bishop, who plays Emily Gilmore in Gilmore girls.
Also this film is from 1978, so it has that grainy and earth tones to it, which compliments this feeling the 70’s movies had. They showcase this realer vibe, unlike the bright technicolored cinescape that films in the 1950’s and 1960’s would display. Being shot in New York, added almost another character or layer to it, seeing how dirty NYC can be and not this polished dream it’s sometimes made to be. That somehow added depth to Erica’s heartbreak, and made her struggle of finding herself a little more intriguing - having to push herself and find who she is now - in this world, while also maintaining her job, motherhood, friendships, and dating/sex. All in all, one of my favorite blind buys.
