Is it realistic to build Medusa stores as a solo dev or 2-person team?

Hey,

I’m wondering if it’s realistic to start offering e-commerce development based on MedusaJS as a solo dev or a 2-person team.

From what I understand, finding regular B2C clients who want a fully custom store built from scratch is pretty difficult. Most small businesses would probably choose Shopify or WooCommerce instead.

Is the overhead of Medusa — development, hosting, deployment, integrations, maintenance, etc. — too much for a very small team? Or is it mostly a matter of building a good workflow, reusable starters, and processes?

Could Medusa become a solid alternative to Shopify for client work, or does it mainly make sense for larger/custom B2B projects?
Would love to hear from people who have worked with both Medusa and Shopify.

Is Medusa a realistic choice for building custom stores for small and mid-sized brands?

Hey everyone,

I’m a solo developer thinking about building custom e-commerce stores for small and mid-sized brands using Medusa.

I really like the flexibility Medusa gives: custom frontend, backend control, extensibility, workflows, integrations, and the ability to build something beyond a typical all-in-one SaaS platform.

At the same time, I’m trying to be realistic. Many smaller brands seem to prefer “ready-made” solutions like Shopify because they feel safer and include hosting, checkout, apps, payments, themes, admin, support, etc.

For people with real client experience: have you built or sold Medusa-based stores to small or mid-sized brands?

A few things I’m wondering:

- Do these brands actually see Medusa as attractive, or is it too technical?

- Is a custom Medusa store a strong selling point, or do clients usually just want something all-in-one?

- How do you explain Medusa’s value when clients compare it to Shopify?

- Is Medusa better suited for premium brand stores, marketplaces, B2B, or unusual workflows rather than regular DTC stores?

- Is this realistic as a solo developer if the scope is kept simple?

I know there’s no perfect solution. Shopify is easier to sell because it feels complete and low-risk, but Medusa seems much better when a brand wants more control, a unique frontend, and room to grow.
I’d love to hear honest feedback from people who have actually delivered Medusa projects for clients.
