r/Ultimate opines about his ancestors killing "people like them" (Israelis) in WW2, ironically doesn't understand the implications of his own statement
There has been some serious drama in the Ultimate Frisbee subreddit due to Israel's participation in the WUCC (world ultimate club championship) which takes place in Limerick this year, of all places. The participation of the Israeli team, New Age, has sparked "statements" from prominent American and European teams to play under a neutral flag, and of course, there have been numerous threats to boycott should they participate. Obviously none of the seriously competitive teams will follow through on that threat because they've worked extremely hard for the last few years to prepare for the tournament. Nonetheless, people are accusing "every single member" of the New Age roster of "persecuting Palestinians". They are all apparently genocidaires who deserve nothing short of mockery, malignment, and outright hate and threats from their fellow athletes.
I've been playing Frisbee for decades now, and the community has always thought of itself as especially virtuous among sports communities, always at the cutting edge of adoption of inclusivity measures. Of course, this also means that they're at the cutting edge of excluding Israelis and "Zionists" from participating.
These almost daily threads feature outright hate for Israelis, "Zionists", etc., but of course, they all "love Jews".
I usually take every opportunity to promote Ultimate Peace which is an organization that organizes camps and games between Israelis and Arabs (both Palestinians and Israelis). Of course, I'm always down voted, and no one has ever taken my up on my suggestion to donate through the links I post, or engage with the message of that amazing organization in any way shape or form. Any organization that doesn't erase the Israeli flag or Israeli identity, is obviously problematic for them. They never seem to disagree with me when I accuse them of not giving a shit about Palestinians, and pointing out how their efforts to exclude Israelis from their events doesn't actually help Palestinians in any way, shape, or form.
Antizionism is a hate movement, and it's taken over a community I used to love.
