Magnetic Trigger Mod

Magnetic Trigger Mod

The following is for educational purposes only.  Firearms modifications should only be performed by a qualified gunsmith.

Origin:  I found this when I installed an aftermarket grip and accidently over tightened the grip screw.  When I saw the new “hole” was directly under the trigger, and the wheels started spinning.

The following describes a method for eliminating trigger creep on the Taurus RPC.

Materials and Supplies:
One 10-24 X 5/16 socket head set screw
1/16” punch
5/32” drill bit
3mm hex bit and driver, or 3mm Allen key

  1. Remove the upper receiver from the lower and fully remove the push pins.

  2. Remove the grip using the 3mm hex tool.

  3. Use the 1/16” punch to remove the safety roll pin.  Turn the safety about ½ way between safe and fire, then wiggle the safety out the left side.

  4. After the safety is removed, the entire fire control group will now lift out of the lower receiver.

  5. Reinstall the nut and bolt without the grip in place as shown.  Tighten the bolt until it pokes through the polymer.

  6. Remove the grip nut and bolt from the previous step.  Then clean the hole BY HAND using a 5/32” drill bit.  We just want to round the hole here, not remove any additional polymer.

  7. Insert the setscrew into the lower from the bottom.  Firmly push in while threading the set screw into the polymer.  Screw it in until only about 1 thread is showing from the top side.

  8. Reassemble the lower in the opposite order of disassembly.  If you have trouble getting the safety back in place, use your 1/16” punch to hold back the safety detent to make it easier.

  9. After you have the lower reassembled WITHOUT the upper, it is time to set the depth of the setscrew:

A. Set the safety to the “fire” position.

B. Screw in the set screw until the hammer falls.

C. IMPORTANT Now cock the hammer a second time, then unscrew the set screw until the trigger resets.  Unscrew another ¼ - ½ turn to give it a little wiggle room.

  1. Reassemble the upper, and while the firearm is still unloaded, fully test all safety systems and function.

Enjoy!

Current Situation

GLX 1x prism, A3 foregrip, CAT Mob.

Just shot it with the Mob and it was everything I hoped, and what everyone says. So freaking sweet! 20 rounds of 147s with no ears very comfortably. The only things quieter that I’ve owned/shot is a Q Fix in 300 blk with my CAT JL, and my Deadair mask on a .22

Range Report

Range Report

My son and I took the RPC out for its maiden voyage. We started unsuppressed with 115gr., then switched to suppressed with both 147gr. and 115gr.

I’ll start with the bad:

The safety selector was unusably stiff. My son had to use both hands to operate it. I’ve since cut two coils off the detent spring, which solved the issue.

My trigger measures over 8 lbs. There’s a little creep on the first shot, but it breaks crisply off the reset. I’m curious whether my trigger and safety selector are outliers or if this is normal.

The handguard was tight until I disassembled it. Now it has a slight wiggle, although I can already see a few easy ways to tighten it back up.

The second suppressed round—the 32nd round fired—failed to feed.

The good:

Recoil! My son and I both agreed that the RPC shot noticeably softer than the Stribog APC9G we were comparing it to, even though the Stribog is well over a pound heavier. Shooting the RPC is a joy.

The Stribog had a slight accuracy advantage, but it also has an 8-inch barrel, upgraded trigger springs, and a prism sight instead of a red dot. At 25 yards, the RPC grouped around 1.5 inches, while I could get the Stribog down to 1 inch.

Out of 125 rounds, only the second suppressed round failed to function. Everything else ran flawlessly.

The Neutral:

Charging the action was a bit stiff at first—not terrible, but definitely noticeable. By the end of the range session, though, it had loosened up nicely and became very easy to charge.

The Strike Industries 9-inch brace is too short for my 6’3” frame. In hindsight, I should have bought the model without the brace.

Overall, the trigger is now my only complaint. I’m very satisfied with the purchase and expected a few growing pains from a new platform. I’m confident a better trigger option will be available soon.

Welcome

I had an alert setup at PSA. I was in a hotel and couldn't sleep and just so happened to be up when the email came in at 12:28 AM. Picked it up a couple days ago. Strike Industries brace, Magpul K2 XL, Holosun red dot, and a Resilient "Ramblin' Man"
