I'm fairly certain the root cause of the graphics bugs I've been encountering lately has to do with my use of the Weld Bead feature in my assembly models.

Typically it's pretty mild, just some screen flickering or a few parts temporarily not showing, that immediately reappear when I zoom to fit.

This one however, was so far beyond anything I've seen, that I just felt compelled to share with the community. If for nothing else than a mild chuckle. Zero errors in the model itself. But evidently weld beads make the rendering engine big mad sometimes lol.

Recommendations for resources to expand Appearances (& textures) library in Native SW model environment?

Good morning fellow SW brethren. I've been doing some surface level research about how solidworks handles appearances & mapping of images/textures onto its model surfaces based on their primitive shape. It quickly became apparent that simply building one's own singular appearance file (.p2m or .dds file extensions) from scratch is not feasible, so I was curious if anyone knows of a public (paid or free, doesn't mater) repository where I could browse more appearances outside of the generic ones that come with the factory install of SW.

Additional but fairly important note: I'm looking for appearances that can be seen in the standard solidworks modeling environment without necessarily needing Realview Graphics turned on.

Preferred Sources

Repository websites, directly sharing any custom appearances/textures you've built**, or low-hanging fruit work arounds would all be acceptable. If you read this and find yourself able & kind/willing enough to b directly share your appearances library, I would just suggest shooting me a DM, so you don't regret it later on should be bombarded with repeated requests.

Example Context for Request

As an example, I've got some long solid cylinders which are simplified representations of braided steel cable strand, and if I can show that braided looking texture as a mapped decal in the same way that solidworks maps it's "threads" appearance onto surface faces, it would save me time in presentations and/or client communications by eliminating clients' questions who may not intuitively know what it is they're looking at without that visual aid, or additional annotation.

Is there a way to control / flip the orientation of individual edges in the Chamfer command with an asymmetric "Distance-Distance" type selected?

**UPDATE: Issue has been resolved thanks to u/dirty_d2 ** >> Choose "Offset Face" chamfer type to achieve functionality described in headline.

Allow me to preface this by stating I'm aware that using the "Angle-Distance" chamfer type, you can individually flip each edge you select.

But I'm curious as to why that option appears to be unavailable in the feature manager for "Distance-Distance" chamfers. Is it showing up somewhere that I'm just not noticing? Or is this just a known drawback of using the D1/D2 chamfer type for asymmetric chamfers?

Would be kinda nice not needing to bust out my Ti-89 to calculate the angle trigonometrically every time I try to use this.

Where on Earth does SolidWorks Store the embedded appearance for weld bead features?

Where in the hell can I find the appearance file or texture or pattern or decal or whatever it is that SolidWorks uses as the default appearance for solid weld bead features? It's visible in the model graphics, but the appearance manager tells a different story entirely.

Anyone else come across this weird behavior and found a solution?

For context, my end goal here is to mimic that realistic weave pattern that's shown on the highlighted face on the plain gray body above it representing a different shape weld bead, not natively included with SW, which I manually modeled as a solid.

I'm trying to communicate something visually to a client and I want to minimize any chance of confusion by having the manually modeled welds mimic a realistic appearance.

P.S. - While any sort of explanation of what's going on here is preferred, I'll gladly accept workaround suggestions in anyone has them.

Question Regarding Usage of Virtual Components

Make Virtual command - Assembly RMB flyout menu

So I have an off the shelf piece of hardware that the vendor supplied as a native solidworks assembly file. I would obviously just be listing this item on any drawing BOMs as a single line item with the OEM part number, so it occurred to me that converting its individual components to virtual could have some benefits as far as data management goes. Menu command I'm referring to included in screenshot.

I did a thorough read-through of the Virtual Components section of the SW help documentation. The section was sadly pretty thin & really didn't offer much insight into appropriate use cases of this tool.

I'm curious to know if others utilize this practice often, and are there any pitfalls I should be aware of if taking this approach?

Is there a relatively painless way to convert multiple solid bodies to individual part files in batch?

Hi folks, I have this very nicely detailed multibody part model downloaded from a vendor's website which, as you can probably guess by looking at it, I would get much more value out of if I had it in the form of a dynamic / flexible assembly model (so I can trace paths of motion of attachments & ensure pieces can be removed from their jig with the clamp in the open position).

As soon as I attempted to insert the first solid body into its own external part file, I realized this was gonna be a large time sink to do each one individually, and this isn't even that big of a model. So I was curious if anyone knows of a built-in tool already present in solidworks, or has a macro they might be willing to share which could export all of the files with a single click or hotkey.

Additional Note:
- It did occur to me that one potential method to accomplish this would be to export the model as a step file, then change my import settings, & then force solidworks to import the model data as an assembly on the way back in, & that probably would be a suitable quick and dirty workaround in this particular case. But that doesn't seem like a particularly robust practice to me.
