Shared good ideas

Alright brains trust - normally I am a very basic/minimalist person when I go walking. I eat what I eat for fuel, scrounged from the back of the cupboard, and easy to do, like pasta and tuna. But I'll be going on a trip with several other people i don't know well and there's going to be a "shared plate" type affair one night. I need to bring something which is not too much of an embarrassment and can be shared easily with others around a campfire (bans permitting), but also something that ideally doesn't require too much prep and doesn't involve bringing anything too heavy either. It won't be the first night so it also can't be too much of a spoil risk.

Any ideas? What would you do?

Hardside Hydration Swig Rig - issue

I picked up one of these at some stage, I think as a gift. It's a hose/straw system you can attach to any bottle (like mount franklin or whatever). I've been using it on bottles as intended, and also the hose part as a replacement hose for an older bladder I own as it is also really easy to clean, comes apart easily so you can wash and dry all individual pieces unlike the bladder hose I had which was getting pretty manky around the mouthpiece especially.

Anyway the last couple of times I've used it it it just sucks (no pun intended) at drawing the water. Lots of air coming up and only a bit of water. I've run through all the isolation tests I can think of and the problem seems to be with the switch bit, i.e, the bit at the end of the hose that shuts the water on or off. Without that in, the hose draws absolutely fine out of both bottles and bladders, so the switch bit really has to be the problem. But it's completely clear of blockages and I can't work it out.

The only thing I can think of is that the seal around the hose when the bit is inserted is no longer tight enough, but, it looks very tight to me, there's no damage/splits on the hose where you push the bit into it, it goes over multiple little ridges to hold it there and seal it off. Perhaps the switch mechanism has a bit of an air leak or something?

Anyone else have one of these and experienced anything similar?

Fine - here's my cork hat. Blue Mountains are the best place to backpack. 🇦🇺

In truth, i'd not argue for it if what we are talking about is establishec tracks to knock off with famous landnarls - altough there's some lovely walking to be had on that front.

But for a vast wilderness to literally explore, the wider region is hard to beat. Areas the size of small countries with no roads, no ttacks, just wilderness - intricate networks of renmote canyon systems and ancient temperate rainforests. The mountains might not be high, but the vslleys offer incredible views from above or below. Some of the roughest, densest walking you can fathom, but so rewarding. And the best bit - you can catch a cheap public train from Sydney and on your way out to a cliff edge or mountain pass wirhin a couple of hours. It is just right there.

Photos taken on my last few jaunts only over the last month, just at one edge of one side - all within a few miles as ths crow flies of my home.

Any word on the Macpac Astral trekking pole tent?

Announced last year, apparently some issues with the production on the initial run, and radio silence since.

Anyone have any info?

Emergency Trekking Poles

Ok I've been sold on trekking poles and using them quite a bit. Been using a cheapo aluminium pair given to me by a family member, great for tarp setups etc and they are doing my back the world of good.

But I stuffed both of them today - caught one somehow in a bit of a wedged position bushbashing, and then fell directly on the other on a slippery log. Whoops. Both bent out of shape in different sections (although not very badly - they got me up 600m worth of elevation without issue post bendage).

Problem is I'm going to need them again for the upcoming long weekend.

I know the black diamond alpine's are meant to be indestructible, but, I dont think I can get those in time. So I'm thinking another cheap pair to tide me over for a bit more, as I'm assuming the structural integrity on these is a bit stuffed.

Any suggestions as to the next level up beyond whatever the hell temu-factory these came from, that is likely to be in store? I have macpac and paddy pallin stores nearby plus a couple of independent places.

Anyone having trouble with Avenza?

I occasionally use Avenza to drop pins in. I have the free version that lets you import 3 maps at a time. I was "on map" on one of them a couple of weeks ago, have changed nothing, out there today with a specific purpose requiring lots of pins and the map wouldnt come off "inactive" so i couldnt drop any pins at all. Trying anything resulted in a message trying to get me to upgrade and saying i'd reached the import limit. Got home, deleted the map, so now there's only 2, trying to reimport, same message.

In the past i could delete and reimport, as long as there were only 3 maps imported in total at any given time.

Anyone else? Is this just a squeeze to subscribe?

Posting here because it's the most trafficked sub for this kind of thing i feel.
