im stuck here and the 'next' button is saying i can't advance to the next step of the accom process. for context, im a clearing student, and i firmed my offer at 1:15pm on results day. it is now 9.15am on monday so defo more than 48 hours after i firmed my academic offer.
is anyone else who's on the UG guaranteed waitlist/insurance/clearing list stuck here also? or have you guys managed to get into the portal and book.
update me once the portal opens. i called the kcl accom number and the lady said the portal can open at ANY time between 9am and 5pm but im scared it just won't update for me and i wont know when its opened since they haven't given any actual confirmed time.
thanks in advance and good luck getting accom if applicable to you!
so i got into kcl through clearing (yay!) but had a few concerns with finding accommodation with kcl, as i am mindful of price and worried that only the most expensive accomodations will be available.
for those who know, does great dover street, stamford street, or wolfson house tend to have vacancies when the accom portal opens after results day?
if not, do any kcl owned halls tend to have vacancies?
in the start of s4 e10 (winner), before the title sequence, jimmy asks kim to sing a song with him in karaoke after he passes the bar. she says she already has a song she wants to do by herself? what song do you think it was?
knowing that she likes the breeders and stereolab, it'd make sense that she'd sing cannonball by the breeders. my other contenders would be fade into you by mazzy star or here comes your man by the pixies.
also maybe hey by the pixies.
anyone has any better shouts?
among those who have watched both better call saul and breaking bad, i feel like it is a given that jimmy is a more sympathetic and relatable mc than walter. i think it's a reason i enjoy better call saul more. i feel emotionally much more connected to jimmy compared to walter.
even though walter and jimmy both commit crimes and do numerous bad acts, i feel that while walter's path to being a monster is made up mostly of personal decisions and choices (with the exception of being fucked over by elliot and gretchen + having the saddest life ever as an overqualified yet belittled chem teacher). walter's path to villainy is also a process he seems to enjoy. on the other hand, with jimmy, i can't help feeling that in some ways, his hand is forced by his circumstances and the state of his life. a lot of unfair things happen to jimmy (like chuck's shittiness, his exwife cheating on him and the guy whos sunroof he shat through trying to pin him with a sex offender charge) whereas walter pretty much creates all of his problems.
but the idea that jimmy is a victim and only does bad things because of his circumstances also feels wrong. he did not need to start out as slippin' jimmy. he did not need to steal money from his dad. he does enjoy lying and deception, which is why he runs scams with kim at bars. the argument that jimmy wouldn't have gone down the criminal path if chuck didn't screw him from the start doesn't hold up because even if he was allowed to be employed by HHM, he would've just gotten himself fired by breaking the law or violating some sort of code of conduct, exactly how he did in HHM. chuck's judgement and prejudice towards jimmy on the basis of his moral inferiority is actually completely correct. he can't help but break the rules.
so to what extent do you guys think jimmy's path to being immoral and criminal is self-inflicted? or do you think he's a product of his environment? and why? because i can't decide my stance.
edit: ive decided my stance -- i think while jimmy experiences events in life that are unfair and while he is conditioned to exploit systems due to his experience with the guy who ripped his dad off in the store, making his problem a product of his surroundings in one sense, i think chuck's treatment towards jimmy is understandable/justifiable and he definitely is an active agent in his own moral downfall.
terrified does have something to offer through the fact that its an ug album with a very clear narrative concept running throughout (imo one of the conceptually forward albums from UK UG since black british music).
it's clear he put a lot of thought into the lyrics, worldbuilding (the mercer, mr chow's, room 401, chateau marmont) and narrative running through the album. the dante's inferno idea about moving through sin and indulgence - overcoming the hedonism of LA (which is 'hell') - to enter 'heaven' (associated with basildon, his home) with a newfound purpose and spiritual clarity is a great idea and seems very relevant to mink's identity/'message' as an artist, as seen in his previous songs such as blow the speaker & music and me, which deal with the same ideas.
i think it's great that artists in this scene are aiming to tell a more substantial story dealing with complex subject matter and existentialism, rather than solely focusing on sounding good and pushing an aesthetic. as well as this, i think the aesthetic of this album is really clear and the lynchian influence is visible and adds to the narrative. the visuals for the night blooming jasmine and the 'my oh my' short film were probably my favourite part of this whole rollout.
and there's the problem. the album just doesn't sound that good, and that's the most important part of making a replayable, 'good', album. the execution of this great concept really lets it down. the mix is very overcrowded. the synths sound cheap, and the sonic choice of having an abundance of 'low frequencies' to represent sin and indulgence makes the album sound kind of difficult to listen to because it's not mixed properly. while i understand why mink chose to use the more electronic nightclub synths for the earlier parts of the album, it just doesn't sound as good, and his more sparse production could equally convey the indulgence and the highs of partying (the production on i'm so bait and wookies would have worked perfectly instead of the overly electronic stuff).
i think this is a prime example of a very ambitious project, where the narrative has been prioritized to a point that the quality of the music has actually been sacrificed a bit.
that being said, there are some good songs. night blooming jasmine is kind of addictive to me haha. playlist, essex girls, creed, and etna are all cool songs too. i do prefer most of his 2023 to 2025 singles though. he should do more songs prod by ok. the ambient, atmospheric sound + guitar samples really suit his voice. i think he should stop working with moustafax2 💀
just my two cents. what do u guys think
