“They are surrounded by impossible, alchemy-born flora — stars shaped like moths, blue moss, water that sings. His back touches the bark of the Sacred Tree; her knees are wet with gold. Her mouth is near his ear, and she is saying things she doesn't remember deciding to say. The remnants of Cerces and Mnestia veil their whispered confessions, golden nymphs and leaves of wisdom devouring them as they're spoken. Greedy. Lonely. Mourning for what is too far gone.
"If I asked you to stay here with me forever, " she murmurs, "what would you do?"
"Ask again," he breathes, his crimson eye half-closed.
"If I asked you to drown in me."
"I'd tell you I already have."
The threads from her fingers snake into his throat, into his heart. They lie together in the echo of the world ending, and for a moment, there is no prophecy, no flame, no future at all.
He lets her tangle him in gold, lets her do what is in her nature to: possess, keep; love is inherently selfish.
"If I asked you to //// me, could you?"
"Ask me at the end of my life."
Her eyes sting. "If I asked you to end the world for me."
He laughs, dragging a hand along her spine over her temple garb to grab her hair. "I'd tell you, I'm getting there."
He kisses her, and there is nothing else.“
