Why do people get so upset when you merge in front of them?

This seems like it is getting worse? I've had people be absolutely ridiculous and nearly drive into the side of me to try stop me merging in turn?

Tonight I was using the left hand lane (which was empty) driving past 5 stationary cars in the right lane & came to merge point (no idea it was there, not a road I'm that familiar with) and merged in turn with the car ahead of me. I could tell the person I merged in front of was annoyed and has sort of tried to block me from merging. They drove on my tail until the road slit into two again, I checked my mirror and indicated to move into the left lane to let them pass as I prefer not to have aggressive drivers up in my grill. At the same time as I moved into the left lane, while indicating, they pulled out into the left lane with no signal and tried to undertake meaning we nearly collided. They preceded to lean on their horn continuously as they followed me down the road far too close as if I had done something wrong. Thankfully I managed to lose them as their driving was danderous but my mind is always boggled that people who drive so badly get annoyed at other road users not being able to guess what it is they're going to do.
