Bard's Tale-style browser DRPG, free Chapter 1 open for playtesting (grid crawl, piece the map together yourself)

I've been building a first-person, grid-based party crawler in the Bard's Tale mold (the gameplay, not the story). It runs in a browser with nothing to install, and Chapter 1 is open for playtesting:

https://dungeoncrawler.app

Needs a keyboard: desktop, laptop, or a tablet with one. No account or email. Start a new game, name your party, and you're in.

Up front because some of you may care: the art is AI-generated and edited by me; the code was written with AI assistance. The rules system, the maps, the quest and the dialog are my own, based on my experience playing and DM’ing various tabletop RPGs back in the day.

I have lots of fond memories playing Bard's Tale on my PCjr, and I enjoyed replaying the remastered trilogy a couple years ago. I always wanted to take a stab at creating that style of game. I'm not an artist and never will be, but I have a background in web development and recently found myself with some extra time, so I decided to use that time to see if I could build something playable.

What might interest this sub

  • The journal sketches the dungeon walls as you walk. If you get lost, you end up with separate map pieces and have to fit them together yourself. I tried to recreate the process of building your own maps…  Graph paper, minus the paper.  You decide what is important to record and put your own notes in the journal.
  • No reloading for a mulligan. Your game state lives on the server, so there's no power switch to reach for.  If your party dies in the dungeon, you wake up in town, with less silver in the party’s purse.
  • Turn-based combat. Give everyone their orders, then the round plays out. Stamina buys harder hits, mana buys and scales spells.  Each PC can advance or retreat on their own, mobs close the distance, and reach decides who can hit whom.
  • Mana comes back with rest.  Camp in the dungeon (requires rations) or head back to town.
  • Five races, attributes and skills, no classes. Use the pre-rolled party or build your own. Progression is slow on purpose: characters are meant to carry across campaigns, not turn into demigods by the end of Chapter 1.
  • There's a town on top, and you have to find the dungeon. The overworld is mostly vignettes and NPCs; the real crawling is in the dungeon.

What I'm asking for

Chapter 1, Whispers Beneath Caerwyn, is a complete quest. My guess is ~4 hours, but I'd like a real number so please tell me how long it takes you. Let me know where you got stuck, where you got bored, whether the fights felt fair, and what broke. Reply here or DM me.

One thing I'd especially like opinions on: Is this style of game worth building today?  My wife and kids think I’m crazy and that no one will play it. This is the style of game I enjoy the most – am I alone in that feeling in today’s world?

Worth knowing before you click

Dungeon movement is keyboard only. Menus work with a keyboard, mouse or a finger.

Online only, by design.

It's a playtest. Expect rough edges and a balance pass or two. Chapter 1's monsters and puzzles are beginner level on purpose.

What's next

Chapter 1 will always be free. The rest of the Ashes of the Forgotten campaign is still being built (I expect 20+ hours playtime when complete), along with more spells, uncommon gear and crafting. The first ten people who finish Chapter 1 and send feedback get a Founder code that unlocks every later chapter. Include your party name so I can confirm the finish.

Everything in the game was made with the engine's own browser-based editors (maps, NPCs, dialog, encounters). If there's interest, I'd like to release those so other people can build campaigns.

I'm working on a web-based dungeon crawler...

Perhaps more than any other PC game, Bard's Tale shaped my childhood -- lots of fond memories playing the game late into the night with my friends, graph paper in hand, agonizing over every battle decision, terrified that the party might perish and we'd lose all our gold. That said, I always wished there were more to the game, and frankly BT II and BT III were disappointments to me in many ways. I've always wanted to create a "better" game that recreated the feel but had better mechanics. I've spent many iterations over the years thinking about what I would have done differently in that regard.

I've recently found myself with some extra time, and I wanted to sharpen my axe with modern AI tools. So, I'm building a dungeon crawler. It's more work than I expected, really; lots of details to iron out. But I have a working prototype, and I'd love your opinion: is this something worth finishing, is it the kind of game real people want to play these days. The prototype is at www.dungeoncrawler.app. It will prompt you to give a name and email; anything that looks like an email is fine; it's only used for account lookup.

Character creation is almost done (no spell selection phase yet, so everyone gets all the same spells). No interface for the weapon shop yet, so each party starts with some basic equipment (which you have to equip if you want to use). There's a basic "dungeon crawl" view that I'm still working on, and what I'd really like your POV on is the battle interface -- which is similar enough to BT that you'll get the idea, but captures the "improvements" I always wanted.

I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think!

Need help with "corrupt" cache pool

For some context: I was installing a new drive in my primary array, and apparently unseated one of the cables on my cache pool -- at first it told me the drive was not reporting its temperature and had a few (85) write errors, but the drive went completely offline. Me being lazy and it being almost midnight (and the new drive was clearing so I didn't want to mess with it that way), so I was tried to run the cache with one drive only. Google told me to stop the array, change the pool to one drive, and restart it; so I did that, but it didn't work -- when I restarted the array it said the pool could not be mounted b/c it didn't recognize the OS. Note that I deleted the pool and recreated it several times, which may be the problem. I will admit: I am 99% sure it was running BTRFS, but I don't know if it was RAID0 or RAID1; if I set it manually I would have wanted RAID1, but I do recall that it was showing 1TB total space when I only have 500GB drives in the pool. But I'm not 100% certain what the UI shows (if it's showing the total drive space in that view or the size of the virtual disk).

Alright, so at this point I shut down Unraid and reseated the drive which fixed the core issue. Both drives in the cache pool are reporting normally, but it *still* won't mount the cache. When I start the array in Maintenance Mode, drive 1 has the "Check FS" option (and it looks fine), but drive 2 does not.

To make matters worse: I *thought* the cache was set up so that everything is copied to the array, but I'm not certain that it has been working as such -- when I start the array without the cache pool, all of my appdata (Dockers) basically look like clean installs, despite having been running for years. Several other folders (like my backup of appdata) are also on the cache pool, and appear to be missing.

I'm not *terribly* concerned about data loss (I back everything important up to the cloud anyway) -- but are there any troubleshooting tips I might try here? I'd be perfectly happy if I could get the data off a single cache drive (if it was in fact RAID1) and rebuild the cache from scratch. I'm comfortable enough on a command line, but I'm not fluent with Linux commands, especially not mounting drives or checking them. I tried "btrfs filesystem show /dev/{driveid}" and that says it's not btrfs on both drives; but the "check filesystem" in the UI says drive 1 is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
