Looking for advice: 3 years labourer experience + tickets, trying to break into oilfield or mining anywhere in Canada. Where do I actually start?
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to make the jump into either the oilfield or mining sector anywhere in Canada, and I could use some straight-up advice from people actually working out there.
A bit about my background:
Experience: 3 years of general labourer experience (heavy lifting, site work, general graft, used to long hours and working in the elements).
Tickets: I already have my safety/trade tickets ready to go (mention your specific tickets here, e.g., Standard First Aid, H2S Alive, CSO/CSTS, etc.).
Reddit
Relocation: I’m willing to go anywhere in Canada—fly-in, fly-out (FIFO), remote camps, local, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, up north, whatever it takes.

I see conflicting advice everywhere online. Some people say to apply directly to the big operating companies (Suncor, CNRL, Teck, etc.), while others say to target contractors or service rig companies because they are always hurting for crew.

For those of you already in the patch or the mines:
What are the best companies or contractors to spam resumes to right now?
Is it better to apply online through job boards (Indeed, etc.), or is there a better way to get noticed with 3 years of experience under my belt?
Are there specific regions or sectors (drilling rigs, service rigs, open-pit mines, underground) that are actively hiring green/semi-green guys with tickets?
Any hidden traps or things I should avoid as someone trying to break in?
Appreciate any guidance, harsh truths, or pointers you guys can throw my way. Cheers
