True crime

I've recently been reading about different true crime cases, and one quote from the Chikatilo case really stuck with me.
I came across this quote attributed to Andrei Chikatilo:
“And now my brain should be taken apart piece by piece and examined, so there wouldn't be any others like me.”
I don't know how reliably this quote is sourced, but if he really said it, I find it incredibly strange.
The idea of someone like Chikatilo suggesting that his own brain should be studied so that someone like him would never be born again is such a disturbing thought.
What I find especially strange is that, if he still had any chance of asking for mercy or trying to save himself, why would he say something like this instead? What do you think was going through his mind at that moment?
