Why are people like this?
Every time I hear about Linux, it’s some schizo trying to keep themselves hidden from evil Microsoft and Apple as if social media doesn’t know more about who they are than they do. All the arguments I see involve putting down others or calling them stupid in a roundabout way.
Why are we dehumanizing and berating people for not using a OS with 5% market share? Why is an OS a way to virtue signal now? Why are we applauding people who can read docs and modify config files now? Why are we acting like troubleshooting your PC more than others makes you smart instead of a dumbass? Why is this people’s identity and personality? How are people this detached from reality?
“Edge evil. Chrome evil. DuckDuckGo evil. Firefox good!”
Firefox is probably evil too.
“X desktop environment is bloated!”
Just pick one omg.
“Don’t buy from HP, Intel or NVIDIA because they evil! Senpai Torvalds no like NVIDIA!”
I guess even the hardware we purchase needs to also be grass fed and cruelty free.
“I use Arch btw”
This joke went from being satire, to annoying, to becoming pretentious. Can the Linux community come up with something original for once?
“Look at my rice”
It’s fastfetch with some custom ascii art you probably stole online and placed inside a transparent terminal combined with an impractical window manager. What are we doing?
To be clear. This stuff is cool and stuff I’ve done, but it’s nothing to brag about. And it’s nice how Linux can revive old PCs. But please stop glazing Tux, he’s an operating system mascot, not a MLP figurine to be put in a jar…
I hate big corporations. But ts can’t be what Linux is known for. Eat whatever techslop that’s served by the open-source community or big corporation like a piggy and move on.
I enjoy making things, not only building systems. Did I choose the wrong field?
I’ve see a lot of hostility of communities like this, so I wanted to ask for everyone to please be respectful. If you are going to judge my character, I suggest looking elsewhere as this is not what I’m looking for.
It has always been an interest of mine to make art, it can include writing, drawing, animating, etc. Then one day I discovered programming and all of what it’s capable of. Everything I’ve every artistic thing I’ve seen digitally involved it. Since mathematics was something I’ve always done well in, I thought it would be a good idea to go into CS/SWE so I could one day create the technical marvels I saw.
I anticipated that CS/SWE would be disassociated from art, but I could’ve never expected how much it was. STEM in general is a bit impersonal, but I was willing to push through everything and eventually get to the “fun” parts that everyone told me. I’ve always found programming to be a kind of art medium because it allows something to come to life.
However, the sort of self expression aspect which I hoped to find is not here as a junior. Taking a look at careers that somewhat align with art (e.g., web dev, game dev, technical art, graphics programming etc.), I’ve noticed that I will be mostly detached from the creative process.
I might create things that are graphical, but I’ll have no say in character designs, personalities, or writing in the products I contribute to. As humble as it is to work on important systems nobody will ever see or notice, I’m afraid it might take a toll on me.
It’s clear my expectations were in the wrong place, so I’m wondering what to do now? Is it better to do something you dislike for more pay, or do something you like for less pay? It feels like a difficult decision to make and was wondering what others had to say.
