56 Year Old woman can't find a job anywhere

I was laid off in April, and I have been looking for a job ever since. I'm signed up with two staffing agencies. One sent me on a part-time temporary job, which was filing. The other has sent me on 2 interviews, both of which ultimately chose someone else.

I have over 20 years of office and admin support experience, and I am currently working on my Bachelors degree in accounting. I finally got bored with office support, but it's all I know. That's why I'm studying accounting.

I'm beginning to think that when I walk in the door for an interview, people see the grey hair and immediately discount me as "too old."

I have a husband, and we have a mortgage. He's retired, so it's just me who needs to be out earning an income.

I even applied at Walmart and got a call about being an online shopper, but the pay being minimum wage and no guarantee of full-time hours means it wouldn't work financially.

I learned about a hiring event this week at my local Nordstrom store, and I'm going to at least go see if they make an offer. I worked retsil decades ago and hated it, but who knows? I might like it now. What do people have against older workers anyway? We are reliable, trustworthy, dependable, and serious about doing our best work.

Sorry, I guess I'm just venting because I need income, and I'm frustrated.

Don't employers want copies of resumes anymore?

I went to an interview yesterday "dressed for success," with a nice portfolio folder with copies of my resume printed on resume paper. I've always been taught to "dress for success" for a job interview. It was for a call center/customer service job with a local utility company. As a female, I had a skirt, button-up blouse, and suit jacket. I walked into the interview space, and the two guys interviewing me had on polo shirts (basically) and jeans/slacks. I felt overdressed. They had laptops they were using to dictate my words, and they didn't seem interested in having a paper resume.

So, are paper resumes a thing of the past? And is "dressing for success" with a suit no longer a thing?

Temp Job

I just got a temporary job through one of the temp agencies I signed up with. However, it's part time.

The agency knows I'm interviewing for other positions, and I have two interviews coming up but they're mid-morning and my temp job is 8 to 3. This temp job is basically helping a company's accounting department with their filing since they're swamped. At this point I can't reschedule the interview since it's for a large utility company for their call center and great oay and great benefits.

Hopefully they will be OK with my being gone a few hours for this interview.

Anyway, it's a job and it's income, at least for a month.

I blew my interview

I had my first Zoom interview yesterday and was very nervous. Two jobs ago, I was let go for a reason they didn't give me, so I basically said that whwn they asked why I left. I really don't know what to say in situations like that.

It's a small business rhst I would really like to work for and I think I blew it.

Interview yesterday was good but strange

I had an interview with a small, family owned business. I talked to the lady who owned the business. She basically just asked me a couple of questions after looking over my resume, told me what the position was, that she was looking for one full time and one part time worker at the front desk because she wants to step back from the role as she's approaching retirement age. She basically talked about what the position would entail and how many hours for each one and asked me which one I was interested in.

She asked me what questions I had, and I think I came up with one, and then I said she already answered my other questions. She did mention she had more interviews, and then there will be people selected to come back and meet for a 2nd interview with her husband who also runs the business, and thsr she would let me know by the end of the week. Super nice lady, and I would love to work for her. I know it's not usually a good idea to nor ask any questions, but she answered pretty much all of the questions I would have asked.

I hope I didn't blow my chances by doing that.

Desperate for a job

It's only been a month since I've been unemployed, but I'm feeling like the wind has been sucked out od my sails. I've had one interview where I was told during the interview I was a strong candidate, but I didn't get the job.

I will be 56 years old this month, and I need to find a job where I can work until retirement. Over 30 years of office and administrative support, and I'm a fast learner. I have another interview scheduled for next week, but I'm not very enthusiastic about the job. I told my husband last night I am ready to give up and go apply at McDonalds.

I've signed up with TWO employment agencies, but neither of them have come up with anything. I know I would make a terrible receptionist because I've done it, and it didnt go so well.

I was called in for an interview for next Tuesday, and it's a job I really want and would be a great fit for me. I'm researching the company. So, I passed the initial phone interview. Apparently, it's with more than one person, I'm assuming with the team I will be working with if I get the job.

I hate panel interviews, and they tend to make me nervous.

Is it OK to take a sheet with some notes on it for me to refer to, highlighting my skills and also a few questions for me to ask them?

Also, is it appropriate to ask how many others are interviewing for the role, or does that sound too desperate?

They sent me the full job description when asked, and they've said I can email wirh Amy questions I have.

I have sent in my resume, cover letter, and letter of recommendation from my last employer, and I plan to take in printed copies of my resume as well as references.

When they ask if I have any questions for them, what are some good questions to ask? Normally, rhat question trips me up, and I end up floundering.

Thanks in advance for your help.
