Even a queen needs her bestie – and some retail therapy – when times are tough.
Which is exactly what Queen Mary of Denmark did on Friday arvo, slipping into Melbourne to see her royal bridesmaid and longtime friend Amber Petty.
And first stop was hitting High Street Armadale for some serious shopping with Petty, some oversized sunglasses to keep under the radar, although it wasn’t as easy to hide her heavy security detail.
She beelines straight to her favourite Australian designer Zimmermann for a few pieces.
Onlookers told Page 13 they noticed something was up when two men in cargo attire, earpieces and red and white detail – the colours of the Danish flag – were seen going into the shopping strips up-market boutiques to sweep the area before the best friends walked in.
They had plenty to catch up on after Queen Mary and King Frederik X secretly flew Down Under this week to honour the Tasmania-born royal’s late father.
The Danish monarchs flew from Copenhagen to Hobart to attend a private memorial service for John Donaldson.
Mr Donaldson walked his daughter down the aisle at her royal wedding in May 2004, with the pair remaining close until his death in Hobart on April 11 at the age of 84.
Queen Mary’s visit with her husband was confirmed by the palace in an entry added to its official diary, which added a note to their official diary late on Wednesday afternoon Australian time.
“The King and Queen attend a private memorial service for the Queen’s father, Mr. John Donaldson, in Hobart, Tasmania”.
Their 20-year-old son and heir, Crown Prince Christian, acted as regent while they were away.
At the time of his passing, Queen Mary said her “heart is heavy and my thoughts are grey”.
“But I know that when the grief subsides, the memories will brighten, and what will remain most strongly is the love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”
The royal couple were most recently in Melbourne in March during their Australian tour, where Queen Mary wore a Zimmermann floral dress to host a garden party at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
It was her first return to Australia since she became queen in 2024, but some may remember Page 13 revealing then Crown Princess Mary had secretly slipped into Melbourne two years before to celebrate her 50th birthday with Petty, getting around in her humble hatchback and yes again shopping this time on Church St Brighton.
>Inside the pub, Meghan dined on a £18.25 portion of gluten-free beer-battered haddock and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce.
>Harry chose a £17.95 chicken, ham and leek pie with seasonal greens, creamy mashed potatoes and gravy.
>A pub insider said: “Everyone here gets the royal treatment — it doesn’t matter who you are. We’re lucky to get lots of different people visiting us, and everyone is treated like a local. When they visited, Harry and Meghan just acted like locals.”
