




Fire Punch Saddest Moments
The gut-punches in Fire Punch hit so hard. I always cry at three points during yet another reading. If I’m not alone in being sappy about this series, let me know what gets you the most.
Spoilers, obviously.
1. Togata in the movie theater.
A man tortured for centuries by dysphoria gets to be someone he dreamed of being for a brief flicker of time, even though he thought he could never be who he wanted to be. He’s a hero for his little brother, even though he had given up long ago on trying to meet anyone’s expectations. The look we get into Togata past his lies is beautiful and tragic in its brevity.
2. Agni wishing for a miracle atop Judah.
Through all his pain and suffering, Agni always thought his own existence was a miracle. This specific line really gets me. We’re told this as he loses this part of himself which he sees as childlike and naive even though it kept him going through hell.
3. Brother and Luna in the ocean.
Agni’s suicidal thoughts and actions at the start of volume seven always wreck me. His inner child telling him to die behind the shape of a cross is peak Fujimoto. The part that I always sob at is when Luna asks her brother to live for tomorrow. He does, even though the pain is indescribable, even though he tries to end his life time and time again after this, even though he does his best to hide it all away - acting out a life he feels he has no right to…
