need advice
hello!
My fiancée and I are owners of an 85lb, 8 year old Anatolian Shepard and Lab mix named Moose. He has circulated through family members and friends most of his life in IL. We currently live in Chicago, and we’re getting to a point where we cannot continue to keep him here safely due to lack of space. He has ran away several times (despite creating safe barriers), hopped fences, and broke through his XXL cage. We want him to have space to roam and run, which we don’t think will be feasible as we have to continue to rent small 1-2 bedroom apartments.
He has lived in 5 different homes at this point, very friendly with other dogs he’s familiar with (currently in a two flat with upstairs neighbors with a great pyrenees and norwegian ridgeback and they’re all besties), good with new people and small humans. However, he is very reactive on a leash, barks A LOT as he’s protective of the house, and has lost potty training skills as he’s transitioned from house to house. We were his last hope besides a shelter.
My question for you all is: Do rescue farms exist for this breed at his age? We think a farm (or something like that) would be the best for him in terms of quality of life in his final years. Given his lack of formal training and size, it has been difficult in the past to find a committed owner with the space he truly needs. Do you think formal training would be worth it/work at his age? Any advice/experiences/ideas are very appreciated. We truly want what’s best for him. Thank you!
